When I discussed obtaining my realtor's license again my therapist thought it was a good idea. However my mom and psychiatrist think I should just stay on disability and find a part-time job. I don't really want to listen to the negative, my therapist said if you don't sell anything you still would have disability. But if you become successful at it than you risk losing it, which is true and I already knew.
My mom is always worried about me cracking again. Psychiatrist was all like it's a hard job, his nephew does it. I already know that it's a hard job, I've done it. I paid to retake the test already and it's not refundable. I feel like it's a way to make use of my degree. I also feel like it would offer the flexibility I need for my treatment programs, unlike a job that's more strict.

Have you investigated this claim that if you don't sell anything you can still claim disability? I was told something similar and it turned out to be grossly untrue and it caused some real difficulty for me. I suggest you discuss this with your disability case manager or whoever oversees it.
I am inclined to think your psychiatrist's idea is truer. In my own area, one can work part-time to a maximum income and still claim a portion of their disability. The very idea behind this is to allow a person such as ourselves to transition back into the work force. Maybe consider this suggestion: I think you could take advantage of both suggestions. Start to work towards your real estate license. Obtain a part-time job within a brokerage. They always require persons to help with administration and assisting the realtors with their day-to-day requirements. What an excellent way to learn the ropes, maintain disability, and transition back to full-time work without suddenly being cut off. As for psychologist Vs psychiatrist. There are those who will disagree with me but my own view is that I would lean towards my psychiatrist's concerns and recommendations. |

Taking the test itself is different from working. Why not go one step at a time. If you have paid for the test, then take it and worry about the other parts later on is how I would approach it.

I would lean toward whichever most agreed with me, but that's me. I don't really trust any of them as much as I trust myself.

OP is in the US, different rules than Canada and other countries. But, still good to check and know what exact rules are.
I like your idea and I hope you do what you believe is best for you. |
