When you post to pc, what are you seeking? Advice? Support? Seeing how therapy works for others? Thought I’d write a poll.

Either advice or support. Although sometimes, I get a post or two of similar experiences there are horrible and it sends me into a mental anxiety panic.... so I try not to make actual threads here much anymore

I never want advice. I do like reading about how others do therapy since it is usually so very different than how I see it or do it. Sometimes general support but usually just wanting to see how/why others do what they do. Sometimes I post so that those who do not do it the way many seem to can see that it can be okay to go to one's own drummer and that dire predictions about what that could lead to are not necessarily the case and that therapy failure is not always (or in my opinion even usually) the fault of the client.

Advice, support, and a "mirror" for red flags -- I am always double, triple, quadruple checking for that after my experience with exT

I don’t start threads but if I did, I would just include in the post what type of response I am looking for this way I am not wasting anyone’s time.

I don't want advice. I never want advice. I mainly want support or a space to post things for posterity. I like to revisit things to understand my thought patterns and hopefully learn from things in retrospect. I also do use PC as a normalization measure. How out of whack are my experiences with the "norm"? Granted, I'd say that people who post regularly here make up a small subset of people engaged in psychotherapy or are interested in their mental health. Though a small niche, it's one that I feel I fit into.

I think you need an all of the above. It depends on what I am writing about on what I want.

Sometimes I just want a place to put stuff out there so I don't have to keep on holding it inside because sitting with it is too hard.

I forgot that option - wanting a place to process/document therapy. I’m sure I missed a few

Sometimes I just want support or to know if I'm within the norm. Sometimes though I do find it very helpful to get advice from various different perspectives. I'm likely to do whatever I want anyway (don't most people) but it is interesting and helpful to get different ideas.

Mostly curious about how other people do/relate to/experience therapy. Sometimes looking to hear about others' experiences as a way of illuminating my own. Generally not keen on advice per se, unless it's grounded in directly relevant personal experience, and even then only if actually asked for.

I would pick:

Support.Advice. Understanding how others do therapy and Seeing if my situation is within the norm.

Never advice and never unsolicited judgement (which I've received a couple of times). If it's a thread, probably support, and if it's IST or Dear T, probably just to process my feelings, get them out of my head or to share them with real people (I find the hugs comforting somehow).

I post because I actually enjoy therapy and enjoy talking about it.
I don't want /need hugs. Just general therapy chat.
Plus to show, not all therapist are money grabbing monsters.

Mainly I'm looking for support, and a place to process and document.

What I don’t want—here or anywhere else—are diagnoses, analyzing, rebukes or instructions. That’s why my responses discuss my specific experiences. I try to avoid direct advice giving.

Interesting question. I look at pc like a reverse wheres waldo? - what's missing? Where is the love missing, where is the communication missing, where is the patience missing that would make this life alright? Because thats how my life was / is. But if you look at my life i.e., my apartment, you would see so much STUFF, you might never be able to discern what is actually missing. Except that its probably something obvious. You would walk in and say, "...?"

I mainly post to vent and to get support. sometimes I seek advice but usually I know the proper things to do.. just choose not to (yet)

I don't have anywhere to vent about my mental illness and therapy struggles besides with t and here

I can't participate in the poll bc I'm on Tapatalk

I know sometimes I go off the handle and post crazy stuff. it's mostly me forcing it out of the obsessive cycles in my mind

I also find the reassurances from others helpful in regards to my distorted thoughts and feelings about my therapy and my therapist.
