Do you know when you are having a pretty good day and you’re optimistic. You go to therapy and the session gets you down. No fault of my t, just talking about the usual issues.

Do what normally puts a smile on your face. For me... I go walk my dog or brush him. I sometimes put in a funny movie or talk to someone I know who can always make me laugh.
Sometimes journalling the bad feelings/thoughts can help you feel better too |

Ah yes, the therapy hangover. I try to reassure myself that it's a normal part of the process and that it goes away, usually by the next morning. I would rather pull my difficult issues out and work on them in therapy (and maybe feel a little bad afterward) than leave them all packed away but keeping me stuck. Then I try to be kind to myself and take it easy for the rest of the day if I can.

Yes, it doesn’t happen that often. Mostly I feel more energized when I’m hopeless. But sometimes when I’m in a good mood, it can really bring me down when confronted with all the problems in my life that I sometimes just want to forget. I like “therapy hangover” ![]()

I try. Man I wish I had a dog too. I feel most happy when I don’t deal with my problems and just close my eyes. They just overwhelm me. Not good I know.

I get that, I've spent my entire life ignoring my feelings, trying to pretend "I'm fine" and now that I'm in therapy that has become much harder because so much stuff comes to the surface at once. It's overwhelming.
Do you have a place near you that you could volunteer to walk dogs with or foster one? Have a friend with a dog? Animals are my best therapy. |

Yeah, I know the feeling well. But I accept it and usually the worse I feel after the session, it's like releasing it and I get slightly better afterwards. The pain is healing.

I treat myself gently, as though I'm physically ill. I journal... Therapy hangover is so apt.

Sometimes it's the other way around. Feel grim, Go therapy and feel good coming out.
