What would you do if you found your therapist mentioned in a forum regarding an ethical violation?

I made the mistake of googling my therapist. I'm not sure what I was hoping to find, but I wish I hadn't. I found her mentioned in a forum, where a former client specifically mentioned an ethical/HIPPA violation and supposed court action.

I tried to look it up, but this violation was at least 20 years ago and I don't think she was a licensed therapist at the time (but she was working in the field). She has a current license with no issues that I can see. I tried to contact the person who wrote the post, but they haven't been active recently.

Would you bring this up? Accept it as something that happened a long time ago and (most likely) the lesson was learned?

On a second note, I'm already looking for a way out of working with her. I don't think her style is getting my anywhere. I'm just afraid because I don't want to upset her and I don't want for there to be discussion behind my back when I transfer to someone else on the platform. I've been stuck and afraid to ask for weeks now. Finding out that there was a ethical vio in the past just makes it worse.

Just because there was a reported violation doesn't meanthat she did anything wrong. Her then-client may have been the unethical one.

If I was sure I didn't want to keep working with her, in your shoes I would either not bother bringing it up, or throw caution to the wind and just ask her about it, because I'd be curious and there would be nothing to lose. If I were still on the fence about continuing to work with her, I'd probably bring it up in a gentle way. If it's on the internet attached to her name, assuming your google search wasn't extraordinarily and unusually thorough, she's probably used to getting asked about it. I can understand being hesitant and unsure though, it's not an easy situation.

I wouldn't say anything. Anybody can accuse anyone of anything. Doesn't mean there's any merit to it.

Honestly, if you are looking for a way out anyway, focus on that and find a way to do it. You are wasting your time working with a therapist who isn't working for you.
The violation is neither here nor there.
You don't need an excuse to leave a therapist who isn't helping.
Thanks for this!

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
