It sounds like she thought you were asking her out, and so the therapy was over. Is this what we are skating around? Could she have interpreted your many emails that way and just declined to bring it up?

She might think:
I ought to get paid for this! He's trying to get free therapy! This is against the guidelines, I must discourage it! Best by not bringing them up. It's called "managing expectations". |

When the client is in the office, she IS getting paid. I dont understand your answer. I DO understand that she is not doing therapy by email, that if the client wants to discuss something, they must bring it up in session.

no, no... bounderies of the therapeutic relationship. absolutely nothing to do with dating etc. I was trying to teremine whats acceptable and ok in therapy (ex anger) and outside of therapy (emails. contact) as it was getting blurred for me after an intense period in my life when I started to rely on her too much for emtional support.

I would also say 'probably no'. She was never concerned about getting paid for email/ or spending time reading them and I brought it up a few times in the past

Thank you, I appreciate your encouragement. This post alone has been a bit of an eye opener. it’s very difficult to be objective about once own story. On one hand we are the experts but on the other hand strong emotional involvement can blind us to what’s most obvious. I think discussions in here are very engaging but at the end of the day the decision making and responsibility is still ours -I know it sounds obvious. Getting upset because people disagree is pointless. I am not arguing with anyone if anything arguing my point (I think there is a difference).

Did anyone listen to the Shrink Next Door podcast on Wondery/ iTunes? Dr. Isaac Steven Herschkopf 's take over of his client(s) is mind boggling, but I get it too.

I'm just starting. Wow. My entrapment was mild compared to this, but I identify with the cult aspects. As this guy still is a practicing psychiatrist, I'm interested to see if there's any fallout. Bloomberg - Are you a robot? |

I guess he still practices, though internet listings can be out of date. Scarily, I looked up his writings, which make he seem wise and spiritual. I can see why he was so seductive-- virtue signaling at its most convincing. |

Wow and I thought I was trapped with a $200 a week therapy addiction! Awful!

Same! I have not heard the podcast or read about that guy much yet but my second T had it as his business strategy to advertise being a highly qualified T for high achievers and even rambled quite a bit in our very first phone consult about how most of his clients are super successful professionals. It did sound like a red flag a bit but he made other positive impressions so I overlooked that part. What I learned with time though was that he collected that money (and my $200 fee was apparently quite reduced relative to his full fee, I refused to pay more than that) pretty much for an hour of enjoyable, typically sophisticated conversation. There was very little going on what I would consider therapy and he also did not challenge me much at all and we never had conflicts, I guess he makes sure he presents a likable persona so that clients continue to pay him for the company. Of course a sense that one is part of that sort of "elite" is seductive and I think he is a smart businessman for building that sort of image and clientele.

I was interested and listened to the first few minutes of the podcast to where the Nocerras go over to the shrink’s house for drinks, and after that I turned it off. I really didnt want to hear any more. Why? Because the guy just sounded like a regular, common, garden variety a———hole to me. And there are so many.
Anyone else have the same reaction? |

I listened to all podcasts available and believe this shrink took manipulation to stratospheric levels. His boorishness as a Hamptons host was just the first veneer. This is an East Coast version of The Brian Wilson story.

One thing I read ABOUT the series said that Marty finally broke free, so I will be interested in hearing about that when it comes out. A lot of years of his life, though. |
