I just spent 13 days in the hospital and part of getting released was getting set up with a therapist. So I have seen this T twice now and really don’t like him now I have been through a lot of T in the past and always find some reason to stop going so I don’t know if it’s just me or not. We sit there for 45 minutes and don’t really say anything he never asks about me or my past which is what they are supposed to do right? How are we supposed to work through anything if he never asks any questions. I’m supposed to have an appointment tomorrow but I don’t think I am going to go. I have been trying to find a new one but they are all scheduling like 5 weeks out. I know I need therapy but this just doesn’t seem right.

It's fine not to like your therapist. Sometimes personalities and approaches just dont gel. I saw one t for a while before the transference fell away and I realised I didnt really like her as a person. Research suggests it's the relationship that has the most impact in therapy, rather than the approach- so if you dont like the guy, hes not likely to be helpful.

I don't think there is any "supposed to" with regards to therapy modality. Some Ts don't say much, don't prompt clients, don't dig into the past etc. Maybe this is his style.
Granted it might not work for you but can you discuss it with him? In the meantime, keep looking for other Ts out there. |

Some T's don't talk much, other T's talk too much. Would you be able to say to T, it would be helpful if you prompted me to talk about x,y,z or something like that? Maybe the T needs permission to be more of a prompter. HUGS Kit

I don't think the license makes a difference in terms of whether they lead the session or not. That depends on the modality and their theoretical orientation.
