Does anyone know what this is and have any experience with this type of therapy? I googled it but it was still kinda confusing.

From my understanding, it's therapy that's mainly used for children (starting fairly young) who are on the autism spectrum. My daughter is on the spectrum, but her developmental pediatrician didn't feel it was the right direction for her. It's pretty intensive, often 5 days a week, a few hours a day. Not sure if that helps at all.

It's just a complicated way of saying that this type of therapy focuses on people's behaviour rather than cognitions.
The aim is to re-model one's behaviour to so-called more functional ones (i.e. that do not negatively impede one's quality of life). There are various techniques to 'teach' how to do to so (through conditioning, using rewards/punishments or modeling etc) |

Thanks. My old therapist told me my new one does that type of therapy and my old therapist seemed pretty impressed.

Are there particular behaviors that you want to change? That’s what it usually is, focusing on certain behaviors

I was mostly just curious. I should have asked questions. I’m not sure what type of therapy my new one will use with me. She does a couple including CBT too which I think is what I’ve been doing. And she also does a Christian based approach which I for sure don’t want.

you pic a problem that you want to change. set a goal. and how you plan to measure your changes then you work to accomplish those goals. example behavior to change - smoking goals goal 1. on day 1 I will keep track of how many cigarettes I smoke goal 2 on every day I will decrease the number of cigarettes I smoke by one from the day before. goal 3 at the end of a week I will again tally how many cigarettes I am smoking and decide if I want to make new goals. reward system - if I have been able to decrease by one cigarette each day for a week I will treat myself to renting a movie. My ABA plan will begin tomorrow. thats all ABA is.. selecting a negative behavior you want to change. making reachable goals to change that behavior, then attempt to accomplish those goals. and reward yourself when you have followed through with accomplishing your goals. always remember ABA is for changing behaviors by setting ........reachable..... goals. never set goals that you dont think you will be able to reach for that defeats the purpose of this type of therapy. though it is used for autism, its also used all kinds of problems, habits and so forth. its not specific to .......just .....autism. and not specific to just one type of problem, anyone can do it for any problem that they may have. |
