He used to have a water jug and glasses on the table before Covid. Never seen him drink or eat. Even if I take a drink in with me, I don’t remember to drink until the end.

Once, my pdoc was scarfing down a sandwich during our telehealth session. I guess she was super hungry! It was kinda gross, but mostly it was funny because she's so eccentric.

I had a therapist who would eat a lot during (virtual) therapy. Nuts, grapes, etc. Felt awkward like I was some kind of movie she was watching while I was baring my soul lol. I don’t still go to this therapist obviously.

I am curious as to why it bothers some people if their therapist eats or drinks. I am not trying to sound mean, I am just curious. Everyone eats and drinks.

I don't care if mine drinks. Or if he has a mint or something. But if he was, say, eating a sandwich or popcorn or cookies, that would bother me in the same way it would if my primary care doctor or hairdresser was eating during their appointment with me--because it would feel like they were distracted and not focused on me. Really, similar to if they were playing with their phone or something like that. It would be different if my T said something like, "I'm sorry, I didn't have a chance to eat lunch today--would it be OK if I had this energy bar real quick?" or something like that. If it was an occasional thing, and he checked in first (of course, I'd say it was OK). But if we were in the middle of session and he just started randomly snacking or eating a bowl of soup or something, it would bother me. It just seems rude, in a way. Note that I also never eat anything while in session. I do have some water generally--occasionally tea or coffee. But I see drinking and eating differently. |

My T has coffee/tea/hot chocolate/soda available for clients; I almost always drink coffee and sometimes water. I can't get thru a session with out something-my mouth is dry from migraine meds and sometimes from anxiety. He sometimes drinks coffee or pop. I don't mind. One time he saw me over his lunch hour when I was in crisis and that was all he had open. He ate a piece of beef jerky or something like that. I was fine with it because it really was his lunch time and it seemed fair that he ate in front of me and not in front of regularly scheduled clients.

My T has a drink handy but never eats during session. I'd hate it if she did; the sight and sound of someone eating makes me inwardly cringe.

She was eating peanuts a couple sessions ago. I asked her what she was eating because I was just curious. She said “you caught me again!” The last session she didn’t eat anything. I wonder if she thinks it bothers me. Honestly half the time I’m just curious about what she’s eating. What she did do a couple sessions ago was randomly start brushing her hair. And I was trying so hard not to burst out laughing because it was just such a random thing to do. I did chuckle a little bit awhile later about it and she asked what was funny and I said “nothing” she’s odd but I’m getting used to her. My next appointment is our first in person session and maybe she’s better in person.
