Hi All,
Has your T ever called you by a nickname or a shortened version of your name? My T did that today on Text. Then she said is it okay if I call you x? No one really calls me that. I'm not sure I am opposed to it but I'm not sure it is my preference either so I haven't answered. Not sure what my feelings are about it. Could be though that I am swamped with too many feelings of frustration at work today. HUGS Kit __________________ Dum Spiro Spero IC XC NIKA |

A little while ago, I noticed that R had started to do so. I wasn't sure I'd heard properly at first, but then it clicked.
It's a familiarity thing, I guess...but if it makes you uncomfortable, then you can tell her. __________________ 'Somewhere up above the great divide Where the sky is wide, and the clouds are few A man can see his way clear to the light 'You have all the grace you need for today, and today is all that matters.' - Steve Austin |

Sometimes in email he will use my first and last initials instead of my first name. I don't think I'd like it if he did that all the time, but when he does do it, it feels personal in an okay way. If, however, he took my first name and shortened it, I wouldn't be okay with that because I don't like to be called that. That seems like something that you need to give permission for. If you don't like or want to be called that, just tell her you don't like it. I doubt most people would take offense and would be glad to know.
My neighbor, who I can't stand, used to call me by the shortened version of my name and one day I'd had enough and just asked "why do you keep calling me that, that's not my name". I'm still not sure how they got the impression that's what I went by, but it sure felt good to get her to stop calling me that. |

Thanks, Lost and NP_Complete.
Now that my frustration level is a little lower from the work stress, I can focus on what my feelings are about it. I don't think I like the shortened version of my name. I would prefer she call me by my family name which is totally different from my name. Maybe I will tell her that. Thanks for the listening and the commenting! L calls me the shortened version of my name every once in awhile. I don't necessarily like it, but I also don't care enough to correct her. In emails, she always writes me as my first initial. When she saw these forums and how I call her L, she just adopted calling me by my first initial...lol. I find it endearing. And once before she called me by my first and middle name. I laughed at that one because she was being really playful.

T has a very sweet name for me which she often uses in texts and is more a term of endearment. I've never told her but it's actually the same name that an ex boyfriend called me many years ago! I've never felt able to ask whether she uses it for anyone else. I really hope not.

Not that I can remember, and I probably wouldn't want one.

No, but my first name is one syllable. Any of my nicknames are extended versions of my name. My T has asked me if I have any, but she’s never used them. It would be weird.

Ironically, I had to opposite situation. On my paperwork and such I used my nickname (shortened version of name). She called me my full name. After a few appointments I asked her to call me my nickname. The time I was called me my full name was when I was in trouble. It took 3 sessions for her to remember to call me my nickname.

Thanks all for responding and reading my query.
I let T know that I didn't particularly care for that nickname (shortened version of my name). But, I did give her an option to call me by my family name (name in a different language). She picked my usual American name. So that's fine. I am glad I was able to let her know that I didn't particularly like the shortened version of my name. __________________ Dum Spiro Spero IC XC NIKA |
