I recently ran across an employment ad looking for programmers for a tech company called Mentalyc. This app allows therapists to upload an audio recording of a session and then uses AI to generate notes for the therapist that they then have to sign off on and do whatever they do with their notes. Despite how laughably little they were wanting to pay a senior developer, which seems like an issue in itself, what do you think about this? Would you be okay with your therapist recording your session and then uploading it to a 3rd party company? You can google the company name if you want to see an example of the notes it creates and watch some promotional videos about the product.

Personally, I don't think I would be okay with something like this. I wouldn't want a recording of my sessions for starters. I feel like I would be inhibited knowing that I was being recorded. I would also have privacy concerns. Are there assurances that the recording is destroyed after it's analyzed? My first thought was also that it was kind of lazy on the therapist's part to not write notes, but maybe I'm being a little short-sighted about that part of it. I'm not sure why they need such detailed notes in the first place. I'm curious what you all think of this use of technology.

Wow...

That seems like a violation of patient confidentiality from beginning to end.
What we share with our mental health professionals is supposed to stay with them.

When we began working together, I considered asking R whether I could make audio recordings of our sessions for my own use later, but thought better of it - like you, I thought being recorded might inhibit what I was willing to say.

Even if it's legal, it just feels intrusive to me.

I'd be concerned in part about privacy, but also about AI interpreting the session rather than my therapist. AI wouldn't have the context and understanding of me that my therapist does, so I wonder what it would put in the notes? Though I know my therapist doesn't like the note-recording part of his work, so I could see him possibly being into something like this. But he'd need consent from clients.

I could never be ok with that! The thought of it scares the s*** out of me. Call me paranoid, but the ways this could be used are terrifying. I wouldn't be able to trust a T that used something like that.

Well, as an aspiring software developer, I'm gonna say that if it is a software that you install on your phone/laptop and neither the recording nor the processed data is stored anywhere else, nor shared with anyone else, I'd be okay with that part of it. Of course if you need to upload it to a server hosted somewhere else, this is a big no no. The company to date says it is deleting the recording but keeping the transcription for the purpose of researching effective therapy: Security Policy - Mentalyc
I would not be okay with that, but if a patient is, I can see how that might be valuable information as a basis specifically for research purposes.

That being said I agree with LT that I think there is value in the therapist taking notes.

They were wanting to hire a senior developer for $10 an hour. I'm pretty sure you get more per hour these days working a fast food job. Makes me wonder actually how serious they are about security concerns. I've got 16+ years experience as a software developer so would be considered as a senior level. I wouldn't consider working at that rate unless I was desperate.

Wow, yeah, that's less than minimum wage in my state...
