Therapy has helped me during certain times in my life, such as after losing a loved one or the end of a relationship. However, it has not been that helpful when it comes to reducing anxiety symptoms. I don't know if it is just me? I do like my therapist and feel she is trying. Plus, she is a PhD with a lot of training.
My current therapist does CBT, and it does not seem to be helping my current anxiety symptoms. Sometimes she tells me to normalize what I am feeling, but saying "it's normal" does nothing to really help me. I don't know if CBT really works for me and am wondering if there's others who feel the same way. Maybe I need to try harder. My old therapist who no longer takes my insurance was helpful with some trauma work and seemed to have a more psychoanalytical approach, but I'm not so sure that would be helpful either since we are not doing a lot of trauma work since that's not really why I came back to therapy. I'm not really sure where to go from here..... whether therapy is right for me right now or if I'm in need of a different style. __________________ Bipolar 1 Disorder, Unspecified Anxiety Disorder |

I'm so very sorry that you are suffering!
Are you taking any kind of medication for anxiety? Sometimes that can be as helpful or even more helpful than psychotherapy for some people. Has your CBT psychotherapist shared with you any techniques for lowering anxiety? If so, what were they. I learned some very good techniques for lowering my anxiety. I suffer from anxiety disorder and panic disorder as well as depression. Do you know about cognitive flooding? Not sure from your post exactly what your therapist has done to help you. Different kinds of psychotherapy prove helpful or not helpful to different people. You probably know all of this already. Wish I knew how to help. |

DBT has a lot of good skills to cope with different life stressors. CBT didn't help me, and I know it doesn't help a lot of people. And like Yaowen mentioned, there are meds to help with anxiety.

CBT also doesn't work well for me. Another therapy option for anxiety is mindfulness--does your T have any training in that?
