My pdoc uses client. I use patient. I don’t really care. I have a significant mental illness. I have significant physical illnesses. To me they are no different. I am a patient of a psychologist. I am a patient of an internist and multiple other specialists. I don’t think that what you are referred to matters all that much. What matters is whether my provider, regardless of the illness, is someone who, I trust and believe can help me.

The t just called me by my first name but the secretary signing me in called me client.

I don't think I've heard my T refer to me as anything but I think if she were to, she'd say "patient" given her psychoanalytic background. I seem to be in the minority but I actually prefer the term "patient" as it implies a level of care is being provided to me. "Client" sounds like a business relationship and therapy is so much more than that.

She calls me King Samson the magnificent. Or at least that's what I'm trying to get her to call me instead of "Sam" or "sammy" (I've never heard her refer to me as patient or client).
