My T lied to me for years and now I'm completely stuffed.

Been with my T for over 6 years, many years ago I told him I wanted to be a clinical psychologist, at the time he said, 'Ok, we'll have a go...'

So, for years he's been encouraging this, I joined the British Psychological Society because I believed him. I joined the psychotherapy section and the division of clinical psychology believing that I could get there.

Many times he said I was a T! Many times he said I would make it and he said recently that we would find a way to get me 'chartered.'

But he lied! I'm stuffed! and still believing that I had 'made' it, I recently jacked in my job, went storming into my bosses office and declared that I was now a clinical psychologist! My boss believed me! T wasn't worried that I'd jacked in my job. And now I am truly stuffed.

I started realizing a few weeks ago, when I rang up about a clinical psychology job that it isn't true! I have no research doctorate, don't even know what that is!

I tackled T about this today, all he did was to look uncomfortable and said, 'sorry!'

%#@&#!! He's stuffed my life up good and proper!

Pegasus I'm so sorry your T said this ..... i want to become a psychologist when i'm healed and ready. My t told me first to go on a counselling course, do some voluntary work, then you have to go to Uni and do a degree and specialise in anything you like within that area .... I'd like to specialise in child psychology/dissociation...... abused children ......

i hope this helps a little ...... (((((((((((((Peg)))))))))))))) maybe you could go on a councellig course first of all ..... these days you need qualifications, not like in the past ..... anyone could say they were qualified ..... hugs, Jin xoxoxoxoxox

Jinnyann, I feel very hurt and angry that he led me up the garden path. I'm now drawing a line under this whole thing and going to work in a bloody chip shop!

Fuzzy, T's are supposed to help us aren't they? I think he should have been honest right from the start and he should have told me that it wasn't possible! Why did he do that! I'm stuffed!

Your T's error doesn't make you nothing although I know it feels that way. Maybe do what jinnyann suggested, I'd think you'd make a great T or counsellor.
You're a somebody, a wonderful intelligent somebody.

You're an independent candidate:

http://www.bps.org.uk/careers/societ..._qual_home.cfm

You're fine; the research qualification was for that particular job you applied for! Not necessarily for all or others probably of more interest to you!

http://www.bps.org.uk/membership/grades/gbr1.cfm

You've had the Society-accredited training! You can get registered, read the pages and find out how?

Just take the SQE, (ii); you've had all the courses:

Graduate Basis for Registration is awarded to applicants who:

(i) hold a Society-accredited degree in psychology; or
(ii) have passed the Society’s Qualifying Examination; or
(iii) have completed a Society-accredited conversion qualification

I know you mean well Perna, but I do NOT have any degrees what so ever!

You are supposed to be a graduate to be a member of the division of clinical psychology though, they let me in there!

I DO have two post Docs in CBT and motivational interviewing but they mean diddly squit without the degree!

Trust me Perna, I am stuffed!

Did you not find out yourself what was needed? I don't get it?

When I started with T over 6 years ago I was not well, after about 3 years with T we discussed what I wanted to do - become a clinical psychologist. T said, 'ok, we'll have a go...' It is very unusual to have therapy on the NHS as long as I have, so you can see why I thought I was in training etc. At this time I got a job in a school doing therapeutic work with children with special needs. All my therapy was about discussing my work. So, I presumed everything was hunky dory!

I didn't realize that you needed to go to university. It was only recently, when I did a post not long ago in this forum that several members here pointed out that I would have to have been to university to have become a clinical psychologist.

I will say that at no point did my T say that I had qualified... I got on an imaginary horse and believed I had got there! How stupid am I!

But there have been many sessions recently where T has boosted me up and said, 'I had got there and I didn't need to be the Dalai Lama, or need to run the BPS.' Comments like that made me think I'd achieved what I had been working for!

And then I recently rang up about a clin psychologist job and the consultant more or less laughed in my face. She said I need a research doc and slammed the phone down on me. I had already handed in my notice at work, and gradually working out I've been taken to be a fool. Yes I am a fool!
