I swear I must be the stupidest person in the world! I'm not very experienced at a lot of things. Things the rest of the world knows about I do not have a clue about. So here's my stupid question of the year:

What happens when a check bounces?

Yeah, I know if I don't have the funds available there's a problem. But here's where I get stupid. I always thought that as soon as the money was back in there to cover the check everything would be ok and the check would be ok and everything. Sure there'd be extra charges and everything but the check would still be covered.

My landlord called me saying my check bounced from last month. She had a fit when I said I just found out about that recently. She had a fit because I knew before her. I didn't know what to do once I bounced a check. What could I do? I don't know. I knew I had to get the money in the bank asap so that's what I did. As soon as I got more money it was in there to cover the check! Now she's telling me she wants me to send her $220 in the next few days, which I definitely do not have!

Once a check bounces Lexi, it's bounced. I do believe they can resubmit the check up to 3 times (I think that's what I remember). If the money is in your account to cover the check, I would ask your landlady to try and cash it again. If she can, then she should have her money. If she can't resubmit it, then you will have to write her a new check (I would get the old one back from her so she doesn't accidently or purposely try and cash it again). You can probably expect a bounced check fee (usually about $30) from your bank.

I learned about this the hard way too, Lexi. Trust me, it doesn't make you stupid.

Let me know if I can help.

Some banks will cover a cheque and charge late fees...sounds like your bank didn't do this...phone your landlady and explain that you realize that you should have phoned her but that you did put the money in thinking that the bank had covered the cheque, ask her if she could wait until...whenever and apologize like crazy...I don't know your landlady but some can be understanding...I hope your okay Lexicon...I don't know how many times I've done this myself...

((((((((((((((((Lexi)))))))))))))))))

Why on earth would you say you were stupid. As the others stated above, not knowing the process does not make you stupid by any means. Please be gentle with yourself. Bouncing checks happens to all of us.

Take care of you. No more calling yourself stupid OK!!!!!

Huggles,

Jen

I giggled a little when I read this post, because I to have always considered myself dumb when it comes to checks....although on a serious note. It doesn't make you stupid because you don't know what it means to bounce a check. I think not knowing how to bounce a check is considered kind of a good thing, becausing bouncing checks isn't good. But unfortunatly it happens to the best of us. It's just a mistake, and I'm sure it will all work out.
I'd explain what a bounced check was if I knew what it was, but I don't. But I do know my husband had bounced a check before, and it wasn't that big of a problem. I assume this will all smooth out for you.

I talked to someone tonight and they told me to cancel the check and rewrite another one. I first checked my bank account to see if the check was listed as a bouced check and all that...it wasn't even listed. But I remember getting a NSF charge in the mail from my bank. So this is a really good thing. I cancelled the check tonight so everything's ok.

Whew! And I was wondering where the heck I'd get all that money...I just have that money plus I'll only have to pay a little extra to my landlord. No biggie...I have it. This time I'm not gonna write a check...I'm sending a money order to her.

Thanks for all your replies.

The money order is a good idea. That way you know she has been paid. Don't feel stupid everyone has to learn at some point. Be glad that you haven't had to go through it before.

I'm not trying to frighten you or upset you, but did you check to see if there's a fee with cancelling a check? Some banks do charge for that.

Everyone's told you this, and I'll tell you, too: It's not stupid to not know everything about bounced checks, finances or whatever. I sure don't. I have a lot to learn. I'm not stupid, just under-educated, LOL! Plus, I haven't had to deal with a lot of that kind of stuff.

...anyone can be financially challenged on occaision...check into a plan for "overdraft coverage"...some banks offer a plan which covers a certain amount of incoming checks even if your funds aren't there at that time....
