So, I hired these handymen to replace my rotting privacy fence. The fence alone cost me $1100, but it was necessary since my golden retriever has learned all he has to do is paw at the rotten fence to get out! The workers arrived this morning, Saturday, and they would have had the installation completed today...all nice new fencing. Except, my elderly neighbor called the town to report that I was having construction done. The town inspector came by and stopped their work because they didn't have a town "permit" and weren't licensed contractors. I explained to the town inspector that this was to improve my property and keep my dog from breaking out...but "NO!, you have to have a permit." This is just a money-making scheme on the part of the town. Also, this neighbor has reported anything I have attempted to do to the town. So now I have a big mess in my back yard, have to keep my dog on a tether line till I can manage to get the job done, which will cost me much more due to the neighbor. She has done this many times before, and I've posted about it here before. She is such a toxic person. I blew up on her when she reported my previous installation of a pool. The workers were great, so hard to find such, and her report stopped them, costing me $1,000's more to get the job finished.
Sorry for the rant. I'm posting about this because I'm feeling really vengeful right now...like doing something!
One of the workers says his boss can get a permit on Monday. I'm hoping so. In the meantime, I'll have to watch my two dogs as they go outside, tether the big golden.
I guess I'm just looking for some calming words. I've reverted to drinking and smoking (after a year of not doing so).

Well, she sounds delightful... *sarcasm*

My advice... Make sure all of your future renovations and such are legal and up to code. And keep all documents of this for evidence. When she reports you again, you can gleefully wave said documents in her face and continue with your building. If you want to be even more cutely vindictive, ask your neighbour and your inspector what permits are needed to build and if your home is up to code (make sure it is before they come, though). Do this every chance you get. You know... because they're so concerned about safety and regulations, they should have no problem answering all your tedious questions...

Ahh... I'm a bad person...

I had asked Home Depot to have their fence intaller call me for a quote. His price wa $2400 just to install the fence. This fella and his workers were doing it for $450 for one day's work. See the difference? I've had this fella from today work for me before, and he is a good worker. If I lived outside the town limits, this would not be an issue. This neighbor is evil...I mean...really evil. She has poisoned two of my cats. One I found dead near my driveway, the other never found. When I first moved in here, I tried to be nice to her, reason with her, and out of her mouth spewed toxicity. My one remaining cat was maimed on her sharp fence. When I told her about it, she said "good!" She said that was what the fence was for with its sharp spikes, and added, "Don't you ever ACCUSE me of doing anything to your cat, but I've thought of doing it!."
My nice neighbor told me she and her husband used to cut the tires of children's bikes because they rode on her lawn. Also poison animals. Had I known I would have faced this, I'd never have bought this house. It has been a nightmare.

I hear you, it is such crap that we have to pay money and file permits to support a bureaucracy of workers that our tax dollars pay for that we don't want!
For something like a fence! I could see if you wanted to build on another story or something, but this is bs. I am a homeowner also and what we have to go through to do things on our own property is way out of control! Sorry you have such a pia neighbor, I have one too. He called the city when I put up my fence, I had printed out the city regulations and conformed to them and was done by the time the idiot inspector came and had to show him the regulations he was going to cite me for the height, didn't even know his own job. Ridiculous.
