Couples get to that point after being with each other for a while. Maybe some silence could be learned to be enjoyed. Past the dating period, there is a lot less talk because you already know each other, so I find things to do together. Like cooking together, we talk about what we want, go to the store together, do the cooking, then talk about how good it was and mistakes that he's done. Hiking is another, we bring the dog, backpack our food, have fun, striking up conversation with strangers. It just seems like it's more "doing" then just talking/communicating.
Thanks for this!

Genuine interest in where the other person is in life is always a good place to start. Asking open-ended questions about the other person, what one thinks, and encouraging the other person to talk about things usually works. Let the other person know that you understand what is being said, i.e. "reflecting" the message back by paraphrasing can help. Real communication is a two way street though, so both parties need to be on board.
Thanks for this!
