I thinks it's important part of the relationship. It also depends on the situration.

It is a very important part of a "romantic" relationship (spouse/partner types.) There are special bonds of intimacy that form through that type of contact. Regardless of what anyone says, we were created to form special bonds with people in that way for our own survival. So yes, it is very, very important.

I think it depends. In my own relationship, my fiance and I have very different views on the importance of sex. To him, the physical side of a relationship is much less important compared to the rest of the relationship. When I ask him why he loves me, he always tells me because I make him happy and I'm such a good cuddler. Honestly, if we just cuddled for the rest of our lives and went no further, he'd be as happy as a clam. At the same time, he had a bad first experience with sex with an ex and learned to put importance on how he was treated as a whole. On the flip side, I find sex important because I find we connect differently than any other time and it's a bond that I've only ever had with him (he's my first and only). That being said, we don't demand the extreme from the other. In every relationship you have to find a balance and compromise to make both partners happy. But it's something both partners have to work on/agree on, it can't be all give with one and all take from the other. On a side note... I'm not sure if I want kids and my fiance always has wanted kids. So if we're thinking from a reproductive stance... our views switch.

It is as important as it is to the individuals in a romantic relationship.
