So my husband forgot to mail in the check for my registration renewal until two days before it was due! Because of that, I had to go down to the DMV in person. So I did and the woman at the first counter to where you get your number told me to drop the check in the DMV envelope and into the box at her counter, so I did. She told me not to worry even after I explained to her that my registration will be expired after that day! I told her that I'd get in trouble if a cop pulled me over and she told me that I didn't need to worry about that as I have until the end of this month.

She told me that my registration will come in the mail. I kept on asking her if she's sure about that and she just told me to do as she says and to drop it in the box and that it'll come soon. That is B.S! My husband just found out about this after he asked me where my registration is at and he told me that lady and everyone else at the DMV are stupid and that I should've called him. He told me the check didn't clear yet. Has anyone else had this issue before? I'm afraid to drive now w/o a registration! This happened about a week and a half ago! He told me to not call them as that would make things worse! What the hell should I do? Is the lady at the DMV or my husband right about being pulled over if it's not up to date for this month, June?

He told me to NOT go to the DMV and pay them as he doesn't want to pay them twice. I told him, let me do that and then you can CANCEL the first check. He said no, and that it's illegal to do so! WTH? Is that true? Also, the check has NOT cleared yet! It's been over a week, so shouldn't it have cleared by now? He told me that I'll probably get it in 2-3 weeks! Ugh! I can't wait that long to not drive! What can I do? I'm thinking that I should withdraw money from the bank since I don't work despite him telling me not to. This is important! If I call the DMV and they tell me to come down there, I will! What should I do?

He is blaming me for EVERYTHING although he is the one who forgot to drop it in the mail! He told me that I shouldn't have listened to that lady and that I should've called him to let him know that. It's not my fault that stupid lady told me to do that! He told me that she was trying to save her and the other people some work! Also, I stupidly signed the back of the check. I was stressed out and not thinking clearly. Would that be a problem? If it is, then why didn't they send the check back to us yet?

Please help! I'm really stressed out and angry now. I'm very worried that I might be pulled over when I drive! I live in Ca. if that helps btw.

Angie

Angie,

Do immediately write to your local police department with this question. You probably won't be able to get a written answer from CA DMV but the police department should have staff to answer non-urgent emails. Get it in writing. They should know - the police and the DMV partially overlap. It is Friday night though. You may not get your answer until next week. Can you go to the local police department tomorrow?

Another option is AAA if you have AAA. AAA has a DMV window which might be open on Saturdays.

OK, I will then! I never knew that until now! Yeah, I can go to the police tomorrow. I'm good until the end of the month still, right? Do I need proof of payment such as the copy of the check? What can they do exactly?

Even if you were pulled over, which I would hope not, you use safe driving techniques, I'd presume. There literally is a window of opportunity. I'm sure, they'd give a citation, if anything, that could be waived with receipt of payment as proof. You only seem to be talking about a matter of a day or two here, not several months.

It's more concerning how your husband is reactive.

Your tag is good for the month. You should get your new tag in the mail on time. You paid your registration on time, so no fees were assessed. I read on the website that you should NOT stop payment on the check. I wouldn't worry about it, really.
