My brother is 18, looks like a model, is succeeding in college and enjoys all sorts of social/dating opportunities. He has it all. It actually makes me depressed to be around him because it makes me realize how ****** my life is. Yet half the time he walks around putting on this emo kid attitude and just being unpleasant to everyone. He will especially start being rude to our mom, who is completely nice to him and generally gives him whatever he wants. It is like she is his emotional punching bag. Basically, when he is happy, he is nice and pleasant, but then as soon as something happens to put him in a bad mood, he starts acting like a total jerk. Usually it seems to be things completely unrelated to anything going on in the house, like something going on with his social life.
Is this a normal teenager thing? I know teenagers usually have emotionally unstable type phase, but this is pretty ridiculous. He seems to be lacking of the slightest hint of consideration for the rest of us, as if he is the only person who exists. |

It can definitely be normal for teenagers. Or not. It's hard to tell.
At the same time, your perception of him could also be a bit skewed as you are definitely very jealous of him. I'm not saying that it is, but it could be. It sounds more like you are jealous and resentful of him as opposed to hate. Hate's a really strong word to use. It sounds like your brother has a lot of confidence - possibly to the point of cockiness too. Things don't drop into his lap because of how he looks - even though I know that's what you think! It might make things a bit easier, but there's more to it than that.

However, he is actually not much of the cocky type. My middle brother on the other hand, who is probably the same as me in the looks department, is the cocky type. He is charismatic and really condescending. Possibly a narcissist. He has more female friends than I do, but he still has very little dating experience. My youngest brother has already had more dating experiences than both of us combined and I think he can get pretty much any girl he wants, because of his looks. Part of it is also the fact that he is in college and has a social life. |
