Last nite my youngest son called me in panic. He could not rent a car, the rental agency would only take credit cards - he has none. The other locations always took his debit card. They did not inform him until pick up. I will have to say that before calling me he tried all other ways of renting a car.

He begged me and I said I would rent the car for him. ugh Could not hold up under the pressure and did not want to suffer the consequences if I had held my ground. He knows the system extremely well and knows how far to go in behavior that would totally embarrass me and possibly lose my job or home but not enough to get him arrested. I know they are bullying me but I see no other way. Been to the professionals, police, social services and no help for me.

Without the rental car he would have lost all of his deposits which amounted to >$300.

ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh

Hi Dancinglady, how would he have lost his deposits if they weren't accepting his debit card to begin with?

Deposits for other items for the event which had nothing to do with the car rental.

What was the rental car for? Was he stranded? Did he desperately need a car for something very important or for his own safety? I think you did the right thing by helping him if he desperately needed your help - that's what parents do.

Thank you for showing me another perspective. I think it is an ongoing challenge between parents and adult children.

You did the right thing so don't beat yourself up over it! I would see if you can place a limit on the dollar amount he can run up though! You don't want to get really stuck if he decides to not return the car on time!

Some sons can wind their mum around their little finger. In the long run it is not good for them, nor for you. However if I understand aright this was a genuine emergency so you did what you felt you should.
