I keep feeling like I should do something and try to help her. She and my uncle got divorced this winter, and she's been spiraling downward ever since. We're all totally convinced by her erratic, delusional behavior that she has bi-polar and borderline personality disorder. This has lead to her being evicted, and we think she's lost her job. We're worried she's going to end up homeless, and that she may join her sister as a prostitute. She knows how I've received psychiatric care, and I feel like maybe this could give me a basis for bringing it up to her. But I'm nervous and unsure whether I should try. Any thoughts? Thanks

Tao -- Even though it may be difficult to tackle this topic, I think you should try. You obviously care about her, and you can speak from experience.

Perhaps not use words such as therapy or mental health professional at first. Ask her questions about how she is, express your concern, and see what spills out. It seems to me that this gentle questioning and telling her you care, will lead to one of these responses:

1. She reassures you that she's all right and puts your fears to rest.

2. She spills out her woes, and you ask her if she'd be willing to get boldhelp. If she doesn't know where to start, offer to help her.

3. If she gets angry, it still opens the door because you can point out that her response is an overaction and perhaps she needs to talk to someone about it.

You are sweet and caring person, and I hope you'll keep us posted.

How's it going, Tao? Have you been able to address this thorny situation with your aunt?

Thanks. I haven't yet, but I've got to do it this week, because I won't be around home until January after this. Writing out a letter - whether I send it or just use it to organize what to say to her - is on my to-do list today.

To those who pray - please pray for strength for me and openness for her!

Thanks!
