My dad is always calling me retarded, and says he's embarrassed of me because of my weight(56kg) and says he's embarrassed of how I look and that he never wants me to see any of HIS family members(my aunts, uncles, grandfather and cousin). He has bipolar and says stuff about other people too though. But is this normal?

No. It's not normal. It's abusive.

Having bipolar is not the cause of his abusive behaviour. I have bipolar. I would never speak like that to anyone, at any point. Please don't think that his abusive behaviour is due to his mental illness.

Thanks for this!

I agree - don't blame this behavior on his disorder. Also don't think other people with bipolar are going to treat you the same way; if someone treats you like this, it's usually because of their own insecurities. People put other people down to make themselves feel better or because they're just bitter people sometimes.

My dad used to treat me like this and it only escalated. My best advice is to block out what he says. I was anorexic for years because of the comments he made about my weight, he made fun of me and my family laughed, I took everything really personally and I was very sensitive (which is understandable because it's your family) but PLEASE don't have the same response I did. When I became underweight they only made fun of me for that too. Sometimes nothing is ever good enough for some people and you just have to move on and take care of yourself.

I too have bipolar, and do not act like that. Having bipolar is no excuse for abusing people.
So your dad abusing you have issues with himself apart from that, and is using his illness as an excuse. Don't fall for it!

I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this. No, it's not normal, and I am sorry that your father takes out his anger on you. Please just remember that it isn't the truth, that it's him just projecting his anger out onto you. I promise he is wrong.
