Basically I'm 16+ I can't drive as my parents don't want to teach me. I can't get a "normal job"(because I don't have an ID and I have no way of getting one, I live in the south and I'm 15+ miles away from all stores, the mall, and 30 miles away from the city where the bus is). So usually I try to stick to dog walking jobs and pet sitting type of jobs. I found this petsitting job online, and the person wants me to watch her dog for 3 days while she is out of town. I told my parents and they are throwing a fit saying it is not worth it and that they do not want to drive me there and that they should not have to. I just checked on my google maps, it says if I walked there(16 miles away) it would take me 5 hours. Do you think them driving me 25 minutes away or walking 5 hours is more reasonable? No I do not have a way currently to get a bike, bike insurance and I have asked a few friends none have been willing to drive me. Cabs cost too much(I don't really have money yet because of this situation). Yet my parents constantly put me down because of this. It doesn't seem right. Are most parents this way? Tbh, besides school(homeschooled) I have not done anything really since 2011... because(my parents words) "activities, and this dog walking stuff is not of importantace." Oh and yes I have tried asking some of my neighbors on our neighborhood website if any need dog walking or whatever none have replied back yet.

Doesn't matter what's reasonable. What they are willing to do matters. You live under their roof, not much choice. When you're 18 you can leave legally and do what you like.

That makes no sense. I won't be able to leave then at all if I don't have a way to make money because of them not letting me...

I'm sorry you're in this situation. I remember one of your other posts and commented that your parents are isolating you and that's not healthy. I personally wouldn't walk 16 miles but it looks like that might be your only choice. I don't know what to advise you but I sympathize. Sending big hugs.

Can you "trade" with your parents? For example, they drive you and you cook dinner, or they drive you and you vacuum the house?

Why not borrow the cab fare from a friend or family member and pay it back once you get paid?

No friends who could drive you?
Schools offer driver education in the U.S., although my parents helped me a bit. Driving is dangerous and teenage boys have the most wrecks--could your parents just be trying to protect you or are they just controlling? ![]() |

To the OP. Big respect that your still trying to work and do right by yourself despite your situation. I know some who wouldn't bother trying. I don't have an answer except even a bicycle would reduce that travelling time to a couple of hours. Is that an option? Keep trying. Keep posting.

Bicycles never needed insurance before. Can you find one at a local goodwill or other 2nd hand store. If you have been doing some dog walking you should have some money saved up?
Parents who are overprotective or controlling like this are hard to live with that is why many run away thinking a homeless shelter is better than the control. You will find a way when you are 18. You are home schooled so you don't have the option of school driver training class like other kids have. Why did your parents take you out of school? We're you being bullied? Do you have a mental condition that limits your abilities that your parents feel causes the need for them to protect you from the world? I understand how it feels to feel trapped. At 16 I would not suggest walking there if your parents don't want you to go. They could call the police & report you missing which would just mess up the whole situation you are trying to figure out how to do as you are under age & your parents are still responsible for you.
