Ok so 2 weeks ago I started playing guitar at for this church we made an agreement where they are supposed to pay me $10 every Sunday. The first Sunday I played there they gave me $20 instead of $10, they said "take this extra $10" as a few of my guitar strings popped off as I had to play in a higher tuning for them as the people singing requested me to and that's how it happened. Yesterday they didn't pay me $10. So, I didn't know what to do so I just said "hey you guys could just pay me next week instead of today, I forgot my wallet." But I didn't... I just said that as I was walking out the door because I think they forgot but later that day I thought "oh maybe... they just wanted to pay me more last time for that Sunday and today, maybe they didn't forget." Ok but, if they don't pay me $10 next Sunday what would you say if you were me? I kinda figured out now why they paid me $20 the last time.

When they said "take this extra $10" EXTRA is not considered paying in advance...it's EXTRA just like they said.

If I were you, i would just in General ask for a written contract that ststes hiw much & when you will be paid since this is an evry sunday thing.

I was fill in organist when our organist was away. Payment came out of tbe church treasury & our treasurer didnt always have checks with her. I would get paid whenever. For me it was no big deal because I didnt do it but 3-4 times a year. If you are doi g it every week & they said how much they are paying you, its best to have the details in writing just for your own knowledge of how their payment system works. Some churches pay once a month. Best to not guess.
