Today connected by phone with a very old friend. I laughed for the first time in two weeks. We gossiped about our ex husbands, talked about our grown children, told funny stories about dating after divorce. We hardly talked about Covid 19. We went down memory land when we were young and raising our children. She is an artist...and a flamenco dancer and singer...so there is always a lot to talk about. The musicians are all suffering from lack of work. She is well set while I an not so well set. But we could discuss it all.

A good friend is someone who embraces you with their words. They know the right thing to say. Long ago we had a lot of fun times...and we took all the memories out today.

She put on the speaker phone so her daughter could talk to me too. They were in the kitchen making oatmeal cookies. I realize I never had an argument with this friend, ever. We talked about the houses we had lived in, the funny things are children did, and many other things. After I hung up I looked at the painting hanging over my bed. A brilliant golden sunflower against an azure background. She painted it for me...over 30 years ago. Whenever I move...the sunflower painting goes with me and is put in a place where it is the first thing I see when I wake up.

Do you have a friend like this?

Awe. Your story brought tears (not bad tears) to my eyes. This is so special that you have this friend!

My best friend lives on the other side of the world. Not only I moved far away, she also moved far but the opposite direction. We have many hours of time difference between us and although I do travel I never travel that direction, just not practical (maybe I will). But when we talk, email or text it’s like no time passed and no distance between us.

We just talked on Saturday actually. We did talk about covid but we just wanted to know how things are done at there and surprisingly it’s the same. We have other friends of course and life goes on. But we have never met anyone like each other. Never. We also raised kids together. And we have constant inside jokes that only we know. We were kind of friends that you can call at 2am and they’ll be there for you. And we lived through various hardships. Also never had an argument.

That doesn’t happen often

Wonderful story about that painting too. How special

Thanks for this post. It was very special.

Ah, I got goosebumps reading your story! I think it is because of the idea that time and distance never destroy authentic true friendship. I experienced the same thing you spoke about...that when you talk to the person it is as if time does not even exist. Yeah, this is very, very, very strong medicine for these difficult times. You and your friend are hugging one another around the world...and sending out good vibes!

There’s nothing like having a wonderful old friend!

I have one. We call each other every few days. We’ll always be like we were when we were teens together. We share each other’s joys and sorrows and our love for silly tv shows on now.

I’m grateful to have this one, old friend. She’s dealing with cancer, so I cherish all I can right now.

There are other friends from childhood I wonder why we lost touch. We were inseparable and I loved them.

There is another friend, who is a mutual friend with my friend now, who we both had to get rid of, she was so toxic. But she was so much fun growing up. It’s a shame she went so out of control in recent years. But, all those memories of all those friends are wonderful and hilarious!

I’m so glad you connected with your friend, especially during this pandemic. Cherish the memories and make new ones!
