Dear LifeChanger123,

I was helped a lot by reading articles on the subject on the Internet and by checking out books on the subject from public libraries. Because of a hand injury, I cannot type out what I have learned. One technique I remember, though, involves using the word "what?" as a response to toxic people. This only helps with verbal assaults though. If someone says something "toxic," one replies with "what?". If they repeat the attack one says "what?" again. If the person says: "Are you deaf?" One answers "what?" People prone to toxic speech usually are prepared for any response one might give. But it seems that the word "what?" as a response can sort of disable toxic speech. Books and articles on the subject contain many more techniques and much more advice but sadly I am unable to type it out. Hopefully you will get many responses to your post and many helpful hints. I wish you only the best here on the Forums.

Sincerely yours, Yao Wen

Hello LifeChanger: I see this is your first post here on PC. Welcome to Psych Central. I don't have any particular suggestions for cutting off toxic people. However here are links to 6 articles, from Psych Central's archives, that talk about how to deal with toxic or difficult people:

What's a Toxic Person & How Do You Deal With One?

How to Deal with Difficult or Toxic People

It's Okay to Cut Ties with Toxic Family Members

Toxic People: You Don't Need Permission to Walk Away

How to Set Boundaries with Toxic People

https://psychcentral.com/blog/6-diff...eal-with-them/

I hope you find PC to be of benefit.
Thanks for this!

LOL that's kind of funny. What if toxic speech is in text form?
