I need advices about this
Basically, my older brother and his girlfriend are having to move out of where they live (rented place) They have to stay in the city, and house prices in that city - even in the areas that have really bad reputations - are outside of his price range What hasn't helped is when he lived with grandma, he really messed up his finances to the point he cannot get a mortgage They are having to look for rental properties, cause they can't afford to buy and I would never be able to get enough money (doing the job i do) to be able to help them out with buying somewhere what can i do that will help them? Any rental properties I find in the areas brother has said they can consider, I already facebook message the links to him |

You can help them by finding some ideas and links for available places.
I don’t recommend you help them financially as you need to look out for yourself. The trick is to live within one’s means. When people live in the expensive areas and can’t afford it, that is what you could do: move to a cheaper area, move further away, move out of the city, get a much smaller place, live with roommates, get a second job and so on. If one cannot buy property, then one cannot buy property. It doesn’t mean sister had to shell her money. He needs to lower his expectations |

They have but they want to get into another rented place if they can, his girlfriend is very fussy which isn't helping cause surely a roof over their head is better than nothing
She doesn't want them to move to a flat, which rules out properties they could look at |

I mean some of what they are ruling out I can understand (like the really REALLY rough area that is so bad the houses have trouble getting filled, its that bad a area), or ruling out somewhere that has not enough bedrooms (for example: one bedroom places when they need a 3 bedroom)
currently they are in private rented, not council the added complication is they have a cat (they did have two but one passed away), both old cats, the one who is still around, if she ends up in rescue she won't get rehomed (if they can't find somewhere that allows them to have pets) I know the obvious answer for that, but it wouldnt work (their surviving old cat coming up here to live with me - problem with that idea is my Willow can be a bully if she senses weakness in the other cat, their other cat is about 15 or 16 now, whether she has long left i don't know, i don't know what her health is like) edit: I know Willow's fine with Tigger, but Willow knows Tigger was here first, and I think she knows if she had started on Tigger, Willow would of been the one go back to the rescue, I think Willow knows that the money thing is cause its christmas coming up, rather than buying them stuff they'd only have to pack and move in january, thats why i was thinking money to help them with the move however they feel they need to use it Last edited by Anonymous32448; Nov 27, 2022 at 04:30 PM.. |

I do understand situation with a cat. But most places rent for people with cats. It’s like everyone in UK has a cat. One doesn’t need more rooms for cats.
But no one “needs” 2 or 3 bedrooms. One might want that, but if cannot afford it, then they should live in one bedroom. Or a studio. Rough areas I do understand. One wants to avoid that if possible Helping with a move is fine. It sounded as you planned to help with buying a house. They sound somewhat entitled. |

There's brother, girlfriend and her daughter though so they do need 2 bedrooms minimum, in theory they can share a bedroom but girlfriends daughter will need her own room (on the grounds that who wants to watch their mum - or dad - have sex?)

I see how they might need two bedrooms. Still not 3. They might want 3. But they don’t need it. Unless they have some other reason that you didn’t mention. Like her aunt and uncle living with them and 2 cousins. Or she is currently pregnant with triplets. |

Giving them some money instead to help with the move instead of Christmas presents sounds like a nice gesture. However, I wouldn't go beyond that as far as financial assistance.
So many places around the world are having housing affordability issues these days. They are going to have to be realistic and consider some trade-offs like Divine said. Most people have to these days unless they are wealthy. As you said, they should prioritize having a roof over their head even if it doesn't meet everything on their wishlist. I have a friend like that. She and her husband had a down payment and mortgage approval for a house. However, she decided that they could only live in one municipality of the capital city (which has 32 municipalities). Moving a bit further out of the city, which a lot of people, including myself had done was not an option either to her. She would not budge and eventually the mortgage approval expired because there was nothing she could afford in that area. Now they are stuck renting and purchase prices are completely out of their price range. They also risk their lease not being renewed because the landlord wants to fix the place up and charge more. The Covid rental protections have expired. That is all the result of refusing to compromise and consider any other options but one. Hopefully, they will be able to find a way to be more flexible and find something they can afford, even if it is not perfect. |

So to answer your question how you can help. These are three adults, hopefully all working, looking for a place to rent. I’d say there’s nothing you need to or should help with except maybe house warming gift.

I agree. Three incomes should add up to one decent income these days. Its terrible but thats what it is. The daughter would have to pay rent if she moved out. I think most council flats have two bedrooms.

It's a political division in this country. Each municipality has a mayor and an elected council who can vote on certain ordinances, budgets, etc. Our national government here is very centralized, so municipalities do not have a lot of power. They can vote on things like leash laws for pets, noise ordinances, etc. They also manage things like issuing drivers' licenses or business permits and running certain social programs.
Of course, some municipalities are more desirable to live in than others. The place where my friend insisted on looking for a house was generally very nice, which made it way out of her budget. Even the one small area that was kind of sketchy had high prices. In Spanish we say municipalidad or sometimes comuna. But, comuna does not translate very well. People try to translate it as commune! |

I didn't mean to hijack your thread, dear willow, but since you are curious, I can tell you that Chile is divided into 17 regions. Each region is then divided into provinces. A province consists of certain municipalities. The number varies by province. I live in a relatively large, mostly rural, municipality, so we then have a lot of different areas that have their own name designations. Larger urban municipalities also have names for different neighborhoods.
I agree, it sounds like municipality here is probably like a county council there. They don't offer the sort of council housing like you have, but employ social workers that help inform residents about housing and other assistance programs. |

How weird. I have close family in UK and they never ever had issues renting with a cat. Never. They are in London.
