A little background.....
I work with a guy. Over the years we have spoken and, for the most part, been pretty cordial. I always thought he was a little rough around the edges, but, whatever. The last few months he got a lot more comfortable with me and really started sharing his thoughts on his/our work peers and none of it was pleasant. Basically he was ALWAYS complaining about other people. Yep, one of those guys. Well, not too long ago he went for broke and uttered a few racial slurs in one of our conversations. I was shocked and caught completely off guard. Not long after that we had a disagreement over a work issue. Not a big deal but I knew I was right. The next day I saw him he said "Good Morning" and I let him have it. I told him I needed a break from him and to basically leave me alone. He played dumb and said he didn't understand why. Since that encounter he would see me and say "Good Morning" and I'd say it back and we went about our day without ever saying another word to each other and I was fine with it. Now to the good part..... He is from Michigan but is a huge Alabama football fan. I don't know what his ties (if any) are to that university but, hey, go for it. He always knew I was a big Michigan football fan and that I especially liked Coach Harbaugh. When we did talk, it would get a little heated and he always talked bad about Harbaugh and how he's a dirty coach, bad person, etc. Fast forward to New Year's Day (just this past Monday). Michigan beat Alabama in the Rose Bowl to advance to the national championship game this coming Monday night. So I went to work yesterday and proudly wore my Michigan shirt. This time he walked by my desk and we went the whole day without saying a thing to each other. That was the best conversation I ever had with him. Go Blue! A friend of mine is flying to Texas tomorrow morning for the game. I think she said game is on Monday. She has a family there who are all big fans. I personally can’t care less but am in support of those who are fans!

When I was a kid I lived in Ann Arbor for a while. My dad worked at UM. I have great memories of going to there games. I'll be cheering from South America. We have a streaming service that shows sports from around the world including some college football.

I normally don't gloat about Michigan's success but when they beat the team of a guy I'm not particularly fond of, well, it just makes it that much better. |

Consider yourself blessed. I like a lot of sports and can watch fútbol all day. I know it's huge in South America. I watch South American or European teams play when I can. I don't know much about the teams or players but I DO get the excitement from the crowd. We have Major League Soccer in the States and it's cool, I guess. But the passion of fútbol fans overseas is second-to-none.

I was accepted at UM and visited Ann Arbor but decided to go elsewhere but I still like seeing the blue t-shirts and license plate frames.

Argentina's and Brazil's leagues are the best here, not surprisingly. The Chilean league is kind of crap. MLS' attendance, stadiums and uniforms are much better than here, but some athletes and sports commentators still look down on MLS. I mainly watch my Brazilian team (Grêmio) and Argentine team (River Plate). We also watch some Premier League and Bundesliga in Europe. We've gotten into rugby, so we also watch both European leagues and international tournaments like the World Cup and Six Nations. It's hard to watch the games from New Zealand due to the time difference. Sometimes we watch the repetitions. I find the streaming service a bit weird. There are a lot of random sports on it - NCAA lacrosse, padel, field hockey, cricket. I don't know who is interested in cricket in this part of the world. How many people watch those sports here? I guess field hockey makes the most sense because Argentina is very good. And, of course, the most important is that Michigan won. It was late here, but we managed to stay awake and my husband could finally see them champions after the last few disappointments. I texted a bit with my dad during the game. My brother and sister weren't to interested, but they were really young when we lived there and didn't get to go to the games. |

You mentioned Bundesliga in Europe and I have seen that. Like I say, I may not be the most knowledgeable about the teams and leagues but I think I have an inner-hooligan just waiting to make an appearance. As far as cricket. I have watched the "highlights" on ESPN (Top 10 Plays or whatever). I just don't understand that sport. It looks like a cross between baseball and field hockey. I know it's big in India. |

Cricket is hard to understand. I don't really get it. My husband had a few days off and tried to learn the rules. He seems to understand some of it. I do have to say, for some reason we watched an Indian movie about cricket. It didn't help me understand the rules so much as the Cricket culture, and it was more interesting than I expected.
I'm part German and have a German last name. My family on my father's side is from the Bavaria region, so I mainly follow Bayern Munich. They used to be so dominant. Now they are being challenged. It's good for the league. It gets boring when the same club always wins. |

Thanks. I let a lot of things go but start throwing in the racial slurs and we have a new ballgame. I'm not sure what insulted me more..... The fact that he said what he said or the fact that he was comfortable enough around me to say what he said.

I hear ya.
It's like... "Why would you think I'd be ok with you talking like that around me? What is it you think you see in me that would agree with you?" Again, good on you. We should all be tolerant. That DOES NOT mean tolerating ignorance though. RDMercer |
