I just started dating someone...she's wonderful, and I definitely think the relationship is going somewhere. I know that at some point I will have to tell her that I have bipolar disorder. The question is, when?

I'd love to hear anyone's opinions, experiences, etc...

Thanks!

When do I tell her? lizzzie Welcome to PC!

That's a tough question to answer. So many things to think about...like, you don't want to scare her off so telling her too soon would be a problem. And you don't want the illness to affect the relationship adversely before you have a chance to explain.

I think it's important to follow your instincts on this one. What does your gut tell you? I know that in the beginning of any relationship there is a lot of talking and sharing. At the same time you are both figuring out if you really like each other and want to continue seeing each other and where it goes from there.

I would think that if you get to the point in your talks and learning about each other, if she begins to tell some deeper more intimate personal information, that would be a good time to share some with her about yourself. Maybe having some info about your illness printed out to show her may help answer any questions she may have too.

I think the important thing is to take it slow and easy and not just blurt it out unexpectedly.....give your relationship a chance to blossom a bit before going into a lot of detail. Once she has a vested interest in you, she's more likely to give you more understanding and compassion.

When do I tell her?
