So this summer, I hung out with this girl, Alex, and we're best friends. My other best friend, Kait, came down too and naturally, i introduced them. As time goes on, they get closer, and I feel like I'm losing both of them ... to each other. To make matters worse, Kait came to my school this year. I told them I felt like I was losing them and they told me I was crazy and proceeded to ditch me at a hockey then have a huge sleepover at Alex's house. I don't know what to do because as much as I love them both, Kait's not a good person and she's bringing Alex down. Alex now both smokes and drinks, and thoroughly believes in casual sex. I just don't know what to do.

I am sorry that is happening to you right now. it seems obvious to me that they know what they are doing. All you can do right now is either try to work on alex. (be prepared for a little rebellion on her part) Or work on kait. Unfortunately, approaching them as a group might not work. I had issues with two friends like that in my circle. They became the best of friends. I had to let it be. realize it was not my fault, im not a bad person and try to move on with other friends. we are now 40 and as a group when we get together sheryl and kathy stick together like glue. I would think of it this way. You said kait's not such a good person right? what made you want to be her friend and overlook it all? is alex a needy or co-dependant person by nature? maybe its a relationship where kait can control her? and knows it? maybe it is because kait cant control you.

Sorry if this makes no sense. Just trying to help.

Have you tried to talk to alex one on one and tell her your concerns about her behavior?
When I was your age I don't know what I would have done in this situation, as an adult however I suggest that you try to talk to her and if that don't work then I think you should bring it to the attention of a trusted adult, maybe they can talk to her. I am sorry if I am not being helpful.

I have lost some bestfriends too. But that was my choice. Our friendship is no longer working out so I chose to move on with new friends. Almost 12 yrs. have passed and I believe I made the right decision. They're happy with their friends and so am I. But before you give up your friendship with them, I agree with the posts above. Try to talk to each of them individually. Do your best to convince them. If they still do what they want to do, consider to move on. They're living their lives, so live yours too. Good luck.
