i did this while at a residential treatment center. i had been diagnosed with dissociative amnesia before. my therapist thought it was coincidental how i would forget stressful events and go into these huge meltdowns without knowing what triggered it, so we did some emdr. that was last january, and this past june i remembered the sexual abuse i endured at 12. upon talking to my therapist who i have had for a while and have seen regularly, my therapist at residential executed it all wrong. emdr has helped me though. when done by someone who knows what they are doing, it can be very effective.

This was the first treatment I received from a psychologist and I wish I could've stayed with him but I had to move. The treatment was difficult at first but really helped me compartmentalize my overwhelming anxiety and stress as I was suffering from PTSD. Very interesting how it works.

It really helps me to process everything.
|
Negative aspects of the product (cons):
|
It leaves me feeling scared, alone, and miserable after therapy
|
|
I like EMDR because it helps me process past situations or my future but I always feel really miserable afterwards. Like I want to cut or purge. Which is dumb I know.

Positive aspects of the product (pros):
|
Made me more aware of being 'past' the traumatic events, allowed a greater level of healing - particularly coupled with regulat talk therapy.
|
Negative aspects of the product (cons):
|
Sessions left me seeing shadowy figures moving just on the perifory of my vision. Had feelings of a 'presence' in the room when I knew I was alone.
|
|
The practitioner was thorough and well trained - although some sessions were overwhelming and left me open to more attack in the abusive relationship I was in at the time. I think it was worth doing and would recommend it to others.

I have been using EMDR as a treatment for PTSD with my Psychologist who trained in EMDR therapy techniques. I would say quickly that my PTSD is in all probability caused from a combination of traumatic events; in my youth, as an adult, and as recently as three weeks ago. The bases of the treatments to date have been directly related to being raped at age 13 and another attempted at age 16 (I AM A SURVIVOR). So far, I have had only four treatments but can report the following observations that may answer a question for someone;
1. I would say that this technique has made remember some of the senses and feelings that I had not remembered for a long time about the rape. It brought back memories of parts of the rape very vividly I would say. I do think though that this may be a good thing so that I can deal with all of the repressed feelings that I have been harboring for the last 40 years.
2. I have noticed that for three to four days after the EMDR treatments that I will have significantly more nightmares, not only about the rapes but also about other traumatic events that have occurred.
3. I find that after these sessions I feel both mentally and physically exhausted and that this usually takes about an hour or so. I should say that I find all forms of therapy seem to leave me with feeling this way.
4. I find this treatment causes my headaches to become more prominent during the course of the sessions. I do not see my headaches increase with other forms of therapy however; I may get a small spike.
I will be continuing with these treatments, which I have not had for about three weeks, as there was a very traumatic incident that occurred. My head Psychiatrist and Psychologist have been treating me for this incident although they are going to decide about using EMDR to treat the most recent trauma. As for anything about long term I cannot say, however; I look at EMDR as another form of therapy to help in getting to a place where I can return to work and to try to get beyond where I am at this point in my life. Aside from being treated for PTSD, I am being treated for BPD, Panic/Anxiety, Migraines, and problems with sleep. I am also receiving other types of therapy that includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, Hypnosis, and in a Group setting with other Psychologists and Psychiatrists.
I dont know the cost for treatments as I live in Canada so there is universal health care to pay the costs.
I shall post here again after I get further treatments.

I highly recommend EMDR for people wanting to heal past traumas that they are "stuck" on. The only slight downside is it takes a whole session to do one "target." Sometimes when I begin a therapy session, I don't know that I am going to need EMDR that day and then we figure it out and have to defer until later. So you have to plan in advance. Sometimes the EMDR protocol seems overly structured to me. These are nitpicks. I really like it! I recommend doing EMDR with a trained practitioner of Level II or above. I do not recommend this technique for "self help" at home unless you are experienced at using it in therapy. A book on EMDR that I recommend and that is highly accessible to the non-practitioner is "Emotional Healing at Warp Speed: the Power of EMDR" by David Grand.

None - IMHO

This type of therapy is fairly quick and easy to use.... it can help create great healing in an other wise unknown issue (point of origin) with the proper professional help, and is easy to learn to use at home or while in an crowded place when anxiety strikes.
