More Information

Antidepressant medications are used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. These medications can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people (especially children/teenages) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts. Therefore, it is very important to talk with a doctor about the risks and benefits of antidepressant medication, even if the treatment is not for a mental condition. Tell your doctor immediatley if you notice worsening depression, unusual behavior changes, (including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts), or other mental/mood changes. Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed.

PROS: Helped with GAD - more than anything else I have tried
CONS: sexual side effects

Worked wonders on my anxiety, but I had to discontinue due to sexual side effects. I miss the lessened anxiety, but it just wasn't worth it for me. I would say this is definitely worth a try to see how it works out for you, as I had no other side effects.

PROS: May have worked slightlly for the first few months`
CONS: Comkpletely stopped working and nothing made it work again

Completely lost its effect on depression pretty quickly. The dose was doubled from 200mg/day to 400mg/day and this did not change its effectiveness but did cause nausea for the first couple of weeks. Also did nothing for anxiety. During the brief period when it seemed to work, it was only slightly effective. I still had suicidal thoughts after being put on it during the first several months when it was helping.

PROS: Well basically, it works pretty well
CONS: Some side effects the first (and last) weeks, nothing worrying though

I've been taking this med for almost two years, I'm just now trying to stop, not because of problems with the med but because I'm feeling very well lately and I'd like to try and see how I feel without it. Initially I took it to deal with depression and anxiety.

PROS: n/a
CONS: side effects

Hello , I was wondering if it is possible to find a list of the side effects for sertraline , for doses outside of the maximum licensed amount . I have been on more than 250+ for years , 99% of that was at 300 . Doctor changed , the new doctor had no idea I was on more than the maximum dose a long time after becoming my doctor , I assumed that she then at least read the details pertaining to the dose , however she recently stated that I was above the maximum dose for less than a year and it took me to inform her that it is actually been multiple years , she then asked if I would like to reduce it . I have no confidence in the doctors that I have delt with as a result of incompetence such as this . I would like to find out what the side effects are for the drug at 300 , 100 more than the maximum licensed dose over multiple years , what the side effects are when reducing it and what the side effects are of stopping it , also what needs to be done to counter the side effects . It would be nice to have been told what to expect if I was in a situation without the medication overnight for months / an extended time / reduced amount . The obvious thing to do is , request said information from the doctor , however they have yet to give me the information , the doctor actually told me that she doesn't know which is nice . Im looking for all side effects , not necessarily specific to any illness i.e what the effects would be if it was a clinical trial .

PROS: none
CONS: muscle pain, stomach pain, feeling crazy, extreme anxiety

I pretty much got all the bad side effects with zoloft, it made me feel so crazy with rapid mood swings, muscle and bone pains, stomach pains, headaches, extreme anxiety bordering hysteria. I felt very out of control and don't think they help with bipolar at all.

PROS: Decreases Anxiety
CONS: High Dosage Required To Work For Me

I have been taking Zoloft (Sertraline) for approximately 4 months now and I have only had a couple of headaches and a little dizziness the first couple times that I took the medication but they were just side effects and quickly surpassed. Other than that it helps decrease my anxiety level and is quite effective for a person with OCD and Depression. It works best if you are also in therapy as it conjoins and works together to help you deal with certain issues.

PROS:
CONS:

I've been taking Zoloft for about a year now, and it's been alright. Not as effective as other anti-depressants I've been on, but it's okay. I am taking a high dose along with Lamictal, but my psychiatrist is telling me that it's possible that the Zoloft is causing more manic phases than I used to experience. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in June 2010, so I'm going through the long process of finding the correct medication combination. But overall, Zoloft is okay with me, but the side effects are not-so-great (especially the dry mouth).

PROS: Increased energy, no anxiety, high motivation
CONS: Cold turkey if miss a dose

This medicaation has changed my life! It was the first one I ever took and I have now been taking it 8 years. Before I couldn't hold down a job, was tired all the time, no motivation or energy and constantly having panic attacks. Now, I have nearly finished a Uni course, have held down a job, loads of energy and motivation and rarely have panic attacks. If I miss a dose or two though it gives me an awful headache, and get an unwell feeling. In addition I feel more lathargic and unmotivated.

PROS: made me not take everything so seriously; reduced inhibitions
CONS: didn't totally cure anxiety, just made it manageable.

I'm on 100 mg a day of the generic form. I've been using it for 6 months now and it makes me not so moody or irritable. It has reduced my stress and general anxiety. It has not totally cured any of this but it has brought it to a level which I can handle. I would recommend this to anyone with low levels of anxiety or irritability. But keep in mind you must put forth effort as well. Now, maybe it would cure me if I took the higher dosage (my doctor recommended 200 mg) but I'm happy where I'm at and don't want any nasty side effects. So far there have been none.

PROS: does help with depression, side effects are minimal
CONS: seems to lack day to day consistency

I've been taking Zoloft for a few months and have also observed family members on the same medication. Side effects are minimal overall but have affected some of my family quite severely. Zoloft also tends to run quite high in price, depending on your insurance coverage.

PROS: No more falling into psychoemotional holes; far less paranoid feelings
CONS: Decreased libido

I started with 75 mg in October 2010, and eventually increased to 150 mg. This was the plan set out by my psychiatrist. She moved to another practice. The head of the practice took over, and he decided that I get to 150 mg by splitting a 100 mg tablet, instead of separate 100 mg and 50 mg tablets. Is this right? I think I am losing effectiveness earlier in the day. At any rate the only thing I have noticed of late (and it may coincide with the new practice) is a decrease in libido to the point that I have almost no desire at all. The good news is that I am going to change doctors soon anyway. He made changes to my ADD dosage that I have always heard is counterproductive. Not everyone is the same, so medications affect different people different ways. Sertraline has overall been good for me.

PROS: used to treat depression, general anxiety disorder, obcessive compulsive disorder and other condiions not listed
CONS: Antidepressants dont respond on me so I am trying another approach for depression which is called the vagus nerve stimulator, its an implantable device they can surgically insert for patients that have tried more than 4 antidepressants and havent worked.

Zoloft didnt work for my depression isssues but that doesnt mean that it work for others. Everyone responds to different medications differently because of brain chemistry diagnosis, genetics kinetics and other reasons that are not listed. If you have any questions about this ask your doctor.

PROS: Stopped depression. Even a slight cheerful!
CONS: nothing for me

This (esp. for myself.)has STOPPED my blues... so if you've tried to stop feeling over-sad.This will put you back up again. For me, the idea of no side-effects is a great asset + it works effectively

PROS: Helps keep you from getting too low.
CONS: Huge apathy - can really keep you stuck w/o realizing what's happening.

This is one drug my psychiatrist was pleased with but was really bad for me. It's a little like a lobotomy. It put me into a totally apathetic state where I was fairly functional and not tortured (good) but didn't care about anything (really bad). I didn't realize just how bad it was until I got off it and started feeling again. I was on it for a few years which I consider lost years. An illustration - in all that time I never listened to music because it had no effect on me. When I went off of it suddenly I could be touched by music again. I didn't move forward at all and I wish I could go back in time and have those years over. They're actually a bit of a blur since no memories really stand out - nothing moved me. Also I had tremendous weight gain (which I didn't care about either) that I've never been able to lose since. At the time I took it my depression was more dysthymia (mild chronic) and social anxiety (btw it did little for the social anxiety). In the decade since then I've had more serious and dangerous depressions and so I can now appreciate that for some people even severe apathy might be the lesser of two evils. But in my case I've been desperate to try anything else first.

PROS: Works for a while
CONS: Decreased libido, tiredness

The pricing is excellent on this medication, especially if you take generic. It worked for me for about a year...but the side effects never stopped. I was tired all of the time, I had NO desire to have sex at all...I felt like a zombie. I didn't feel like myself at all, basically like I had no emotions. I do NOT recommend this, at all.

PROS: none
CONS: sent me into a huge manic episode

I took Zoloft to combat acute depression in Bipolar 1 and before I could even feel the benefits, I flew into a horrible mixed episode and became aggressive and suicidal. I would not recommend this medication to anyone with any type of bipolar disorder or mood dysregulation.

PROS:
CONS: severe insomnia, tremors, headache.

After 3 days on this med, I knew it was not right for me. I began my first dose on Thursday, did not sleep Friday, Saturday or Sunday. My body was exhausted, buy my mind would not rest. I was the worst weekend ever.

PROS: May have kept depressive symptoms under control.
CONS: Symptoms did not decrease noticeably.

The side-effect for me was being so lethargic that I couldn't do much at all... Eventually I had to switch because Zoloft wasn't doing any more than just keeping me from killing myself--the depression stuck around despite being on very high doses of it.

PROS: mild relief from depression
CONS: not enough for major depression relief, terrible headaches

I tried this drug on three separate occasions separated by about 3-4 year intervals, hoping it would ease my depression. Every single time I started a trial, I thought, "oh yeah... I think it's working...I think..." And then by about the second week I had to admit that it really wasn't doing much aside from giving me a good headache. It may work for some people, but it truly didn't help me at all. I highly recommend Provigil for depression if you are not having luck with the SSRI/SNRI category. I think it may work well for people who suffer from a depression that has more "rage/aggression" symptoms, but my depression was more of an atypical one, and not associated with angry feelings. Subtypes of depression make a big difference in terms of what medication will work for you.

PROS: Does make you feel better over time
CONS: Very tired when first started drug

Once the drug had some time to work, I did find that I felt better overall. In the beginning, I was very tired as a side effect, but this got better in time. Have not had any weight gain on drug so far.

PROS: made me much happier, helped my sleep
CONS: a little nausea at first, some twitching, orgasms are disappointing

I was initially prescribed Wellbutrin SR for severe, suicidal depression. The Wellbutrin jolted me out of it, but made me a bit manic, unable to sleep or eat. The dr added Zoloft and they work great together. When I was on Zoloft alone, I felt kind of apathetic and had *no* sex drive. Now that I'm on both, I have a healthy drive (it's just that my orgasms are blah), and I still have emotional ups and downs. The difference with meds is, I can put them in perspective. I'd hoped Zoloft would help me gain some of the weight I lost from depression/being on Wellbutrin, but it hasn't yet. The dr says it's only been a month, give it time. One annoying thing is, I can't drink. Even if I have just one or two, I feel completely hammered and I get terrible headaches the next day. I know these meds have side effects and they can be difficult to deal with, but a lot of days I feel that they literally saved my life. I would've carried out a successful attempt eventually. Or I would have killed myself or somebody else with my severe drinking problem. I'm glad they exist.

PROS: none
CONS: no benefits, just side effects

I was on zoloft for approx a year and a half at 175mg a day. During the entire time, anxiety stayed the same or worsened. Depression stayed the same or got worse. I would sweat all the time, especially night sweats. The worse part is the zombie feeling. You could have punched me in the face I wouldn't have cared. Extreme apathy, like detached from reality. Pretty much felt like a burn out...

PROS: Decreased anxiety
CONS: Sexual side effects, headaches

I was on Zoloft for a few years for anxiety and depression. It helped my mood considerably. It had wonderful results, except for the sexual side effects (not interested in sex AT ALL).

PROS: Helped anxiety
CONS: Tiredness, lethargy

Zoloft helped my anxiety, but did nothing for my depression. I found it be quite a useless med as its effects wore off quickly. I do however know that many people have benfitted from it.

PROS: no weight gain, motivated, thinking more clearly
CONS: no energy, sleepy, loss of appetite

Research before walking into your doctor's office!! I took this for a couple of months rite after Paxil. So i was treated for social anxiety and panic attacks- 25mg zoloft and .25 mg of xanax. It worked great at the beginning, but then my anxiety & panic attacks returned, as well as my depression. And they increased the dosage- 50 mg zoloft, 1 mg xanax. Finally I went to a psychiatrist, and I was told that I been given the wrong medication for the wrong illness- he claims i have bipolar disorder, which means paxil, zoloft and prozac, actually makes it worse... so make sure to ask a lot of questions when you are prescribed something! I did lose weight and it seemed to be working so it doesn't hurt to give it a try- no significant side effects.

PROS: No more crying, feel a little lighterin my moods (i'm a rapid cycler, bi-polar 10 yrs, also borderline personality disorder)
CONS: weight gain, no interest in sex, still searching for the right combo

I have been tried on many different meds since i was diagnosed 11 years ago. It wasn't till I stopped drinking and drugging that the total effects of my conditioned showed its true colors. I ended up in hospital in Feb/08 and had a new doc who changed my meds. Zoloft is one of them, i dont see her till the end of the month, i will be disscusing the way i feel about this med then.

PROS: Nothing
CONS: Drowsy, thirst, depression..

I was on Zoloft for a year before I decided to switch my medication. The doctor told me it could take months before it would kick in. My depression worsened. I felt suicidal at times. I fell asleep during class. When I was awake, I was thirsty all the time. It might help others, but for me, this wasn't the right medication.

PROS: less depression
CONS: Fatigue, Thirst, feeling of "overwhelming numbness", Sever head aches

I was on Zoloft for 7 weeks and then my head aches became unbearable and so I was taken off it. While on Zoloft the first side-affect which came almost as soon as i started taking it was at around 2:00 everyday I would just crash and need to sleep, which had affected my studies. Also I got occasianal feelings of overwheming emotions (feeling really happy, really depressed, anxious etc all at the same time) which was quite strange but it didnt happen often. at about the 4 week mark I started to notice that i felt less depresses, although i also started getting bad head aches, and over the next few weeks they got worce and worce untill i had to be put on prescription pain medication for the pain. at the 7 week mark i was taken off Zoloft

PROS: None, unless you like derealization
CONS: Headaches, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, decreased libido, shaky, horrible withdrawal

Hating pills in the first place and having a bad experience with my doctor and the pills, leads me with nothing positive to say about this drug.

PROS: Defintely halped the Depression
CONS: "Emotionless" & low libido

Besides the loss of libido, I didn't experience any other side effects. I started at 50 mg, then went to 100, then to 150. 150 made me too tired so I went down to 100 and stayed there for 8 months. I only went off it cause I had no desires in bed, the idea of it actually disgusted me. Also, it made me feel flat. I tend to be a "crier" even in happy situations, I didn't shed a tear, happy or sad, or even get a lump in my throat the entire time I was on the drug.

PROS: depression not so present
CONS: no emotion is present, and libido is dead. weight gain.

Zoloft made me feel like a Stepford wife. I was placid and undisturbed by most things. I would reccomend this to anyone dealing with truly serious depression, as a way to get out. But the result is little to no interest in much of anything, including sex. If your self-conception or relationship involves a significant component of sexual desire, that is such a serious side-effect that this drug can only be called therapeutic if you have serious, debilitating depression.

PROS: About the 2nd day I took it, I felt.. more.. uplifted, and energized immediatly after I took it.
CONS: Dry mouth and very jittery.. and sleepy at the end of the day..

When I took it, it worked for about.. a month. And then it just stopped working. But I felt like I wasn't even depressed anymore during that month! It was great! I felt, energized, ready to start the day, and just more alive.
