Positive aspects of the product (pros):
helps to mellow out before sleep and fall asleep quite well
Negative aspects of the product (cons):
slightly addictive, horrid taste
I use valerian for sleep and it works well (doesn't zonk me out, but helps fall asleep naturally without disturbing the sleep cycle, which is great).
Is slightly addictive when taken long term in higher doses (problems falling asleep without and rebound anxiety).

works OK

Negative aspects of the product (cons):

I've read that it's not good for the long term
There's much better stuff available. I've noticed that good
formulas seem to avoid using it. Complexes are better than
single herbs.

Positive aspects of the product (pros):
very mild sedative effect; no prescription needed

Negative aspects of the product (cons):

I have used Valerian to help me sleep, but really haven't noticed much benefit when taking for anxiety or depression. It is very mild, and I have had to use it in addition to other herbs and/or meds, even for a good nights sleep. It is like the icing on the cake when used with Trazodone for sleep!

If you're going to buy this stuff, don't buy the valerian in pills, it's a total waste of money. Buy it in bu;lk at a herbal shop. It's real cheap

Positive aspects of the product (pros):
no side effects (unlike most sleep meds)
Negative aspects of the product (cons):
finding suitable dosing takes persistence
This herb is sold in very low mgs in most cases (25 - 160mg) whereas I need between 800 -1200 mg a night for sleep. With that said, it is rather inexpensive even at higher doses, a bottle of 180 capsules of 530 mg was less than $15.00 (= .08 a capsule.) It usually takes an hour before feeling the effects, best to also be "winding down" while waiting, to allow for fullest effect.

Positive aspects of the product (pros):

Mild, generally low side-effects
Negative aspects of the product (cons):
Low effectiveness, possible alduteration - unregulated in the US

I honestly get little to no effect from valerian, even in high milligram dosage over a period of time. I found a decent smelling/tasting tea that includes valerian - 'SleepyTime Extra' by Celestial Seasonings. It's a lemony-minty tea (with only a little bitter mousy flavor if left to steep for a long time) that does help me wind down after work.

Positive aspects of the product (pros):
helps with sleep effectively and still lets you wake up when you are ready with no medicine head
Negative aspects of the product (cons):
doesn't work as fast as other sleep remedies
It helped me to be able to sleep when I couldn't, if I thought to take it early enough. Once it is the middle of the night and you realize you can't get to sleep, there's not as much point. It was better than taking Tylenol PM because it didn't knock me out for too long or make me groggy the next day. When also on St. John's Wort, Valerian works faster and is more powerful. After starting SJW, Valerian would make me sleep in the middle of the afternoon even in small quanities.

I couldn't get past the smell/taste of them...no matter what version I tried of it. I didn't really find any relief from it either.

Works really fast and it only take 1-2 pills to get results - 3 pills for a good night sleep. The cost is very low and the product can be purchased at your local store.
Negative aspects of the product (cons):
May not work well with all medicines.... check with your doctor.

AWESOME!!!! - I took this before I went back on a Rx medicine and I can still take it in between my regular medicine of Celexa as needed, no side effects to speak of so far.
It is also GREAT in helping to settle your nerves or to decrease panic attacks as they occur.... it even relaxes you enough for a good night sleep.
per Wal-Mart: 100 pills for around $5.50
