Hi there. I tried a lot of ways to find meaning in my life. The most rewarding lately has been mindfulness. There is no "hocus pocus" to it. It is not going to change all the things I do not like in my life, but it does offer me the opportunity to explore new perspectives on things.

It is experimental in the sense that you try things and see what works for you. There are dozens of ways to practice mindfulness. The most mundane for me is washing dishes. It is kind of a boring job, but I take it as a challenge. Sometimes I listen to a podcast while doing dishes or just focus on the details of putting soap on the sponge and wiping the dishes with the sponge and rinsing them. It is a different experience than if I rush to get them done to do something "I really want to do."

There are many ways to start. Jon Kabat Zinn has hundreds of youtube videos as they are one of the people that has been bringing mindfulness into the mainstream.

A kind grandfatherlike person is Padraig O' Morain also on youtube.

The best app I have found for smartphone is Healthy Minds. It is free with no ads so it is not like some apps that drive me crazy trying to escape from ads to get back to the program . When I open the program it automatically starts where I completed a module that run about 5-10 minutes each. Some are informational and some are guided experiential segments. It is put out by the University of Wisconsin and is scientifically validated by leading scientists in brain and mindfulness expertise. You can download it on Apple Store or Google Play.

I am interested in any experiences you have had with mindfulness. To me it is one of the best self care tools available. If I am not happy, what do I have to lose by trying it? And that is why I start my day with it.

I find meaning in vibe cat. Seems like he pops up randomly on you tube just to remind me that joy still exists.

Breaking Dawn I am so sorry you are hurting. I think it's a really wonderful skill you have to be able to see both the pain / ugly parts and also have gratitude and love. I admire that. And you have my support.

I’m trying patience. It seems to make me believe that my Schizophrenia is measly. I am also trying to be one with the moment. Being here now seems to be a big step for me. I want to say that I’m being even-tempered and also in the actuality personable partly because happiness becomes me. I might say again it’s maturity that’s making it work. So when it comes down to it I’m trying to be mature.

@Brego hope you find a stable path that continues on into the future. You seem to have a positive attitude.

Sometimes I have to rely on other's opinions to let me know what they see that I do not. That has helped me many a time when I was confidently charging ahead not anticipating the trouble that lie ahead that an outside observer could see.

All the best to you @CANDC

Mindfulness has been a lifesaver for me. It’s simply living in the moment.
There’s a meditation aspect to it also that I need to work on . As meditation is very difficult for me. But don’t let that deter you from trying mindfulness which is
simply learning how to be present in the moment. It’s all we really have . The past is gone. Even one second ago , we cannot get back. And the future is unknown.
All we have is now, Really concentrate on what your doing this present moment.
It can help you stop thinking of hurtful past moments. Or anxiety about the future.
PM me anytime if you’d like to have a deeper conversation about this subject.
Best to all…….

I hear you @moodyblue83 and I agree mindfulness can be a big help. I found this app that is free and without ads that helps with information and meditation. It is only 5-10 minutes a day and if I miss a day no one says anything and I just do the lesson the next day.

Healthy Minds is available on apple and android for free download.

I used to be a regular attendee of the Buddhist temple in my area and the first meditation they taught me was "Mindfulness of Breathing." Exactly what it sounds like. I was instructed to sit in a meditation pose and breath in 2, 3. and out 2, 3 and keep my thoughts focused only on the act of breathing. If my thoughts strayed, I was to turn them back to my breathing. It was near impossible to keep my thoughts on the breathing, but I became quite good at returning my thoughts to center. Just a gentle turn. Nothing aggressive.

I'm a long way from that temple now, but I still find myself stopping to breathe and control my thoughts. It helps me weather life's up and downs. Equanimity.

@Aurelius710 thanks for sharing that story.

I find following the breath reduces the number of thoughts and intensity of emotions. Glad you found a practice that helps you.

I find the Dalai Lama treats people as if they were his best friend. He also is open minded about all religions which is to me the basis of what I am interested in. @CANDC

Yeah, mindfulness and meditation are pretty much the best things that help me stay centered. I think they're also a "holistic" approach, rather than treating people as problems. Of course, there are mental health problems - I am not denying that. But meditation has helped me see clearly. As clearly as I'll be able to see. Or perhaps I'll be able to see even more clearly in a few years. I just feel like the practice becomes a way of life and helps me feel like I'm progressing. That is definitely something worth preserving.

I find mindfulness very useful in my day to day activities related to life. I have schizophrenia and autism and find that being in the moment and trying to tackle life’s problems one by one as they appear helps me cope with my condition. Peace to all earthlings ✌️

@Hohumdude I hear you.

I feel more in control when I do not fly off the handle every time. Mindfulness gives me space in my mind to choose what I say more carefully. I think people around me like it better too when they are not wondering if I will start an angry tirade.

All the best to you! @CANDC
