Greetings.🙏

As a fan-of and studier of one spiritual path, but Not in my eyes a 'true follower' of any - when I look at it, the five precepts associated with that path (just five, remember) cover such a vast amount of things as to point to a great practically 'all encompassing' insight having taken place. Absolutely. To me.

I know, people say these five precepts are just common sense hehe - and they really should be, yes.👍

So the five great stumbling blocks of man are essentially these:

1) No killing or harming any sentient being

2) No lying

3) No stealing

4) No sexual misconduct

5) No drinking, partaking in mind altering substances

Achieve these and it's all happy happy from there fam. We'll be lucky to get past the first precept. Namaste🙏

@mote.of.soul these are also the basis for ethical behavior no matter what your religious affiliation.

I agree they are challenging but they do set a high bar for ethical living, something that is not highly touted in modern western society that seems to be more interested in getting more and unfortunately the result of that has been enjoying it less. Anyone that questions that statement only need look at the rates of depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges facing modern societies.

The reason those guidelines are so difficult is the mind is afflicted with negative emotions. Maybe we need to focus more on those and finding a way to cultivate positive values. That also sounds challenging but I think it is doable. Let's not throw up our hands in despair but actually make a sincere effort to fix what we can and make our lives and others a little bit better. That I think is compatible with all religions including non religions.

Hey👋

Yes I absolutely agree and know what you're saying @CANDC, thanks for your reply.🙏 Yes, the 5 Precepts fully are shared by other religious and spiritual affiliations - and also by just ordinary people who have good standards without any connection to religions at all. It doesn't matter. It's great! But of course these precepts are part of a wider spiritual path, practice, effort, philosophy, morality etc, with the purpose of - exactly as you mentioned - producing the "end of suffering" = a 'fantastic mental health'! for good! - perhaps in this lifetime or in a future one (intriguing. A person should look into this!).

It's obviously hard to envisage the human race becoming totally peaceful in the near future, but you can only try to change yourself really, so yeah, the world is what it is. There's always hope and I liked your encouraging post CANDC🙂👍

Those mere 5 precepts contain a heck of a lot. That's what I'm saying. Crucial elements to life. Good to be mindful of them always.

Thank you CANDC. You're an awesome person.🙏

This is a great starting point for living an ethical life. How much easier it would be to get along with people if everyone adopted some basic ethical standards. We can only hope it will happen. For now we can live by the highest standards of which we are capable. In this small way we can transform the world one person at a time.

Well said Candc. I'm disappointed in someone who I've tried to be there for. They aren't the person I thought they were. I feel like they are baiting me to react too

They aren't capable of ethical behaviour.

But I am.

(not anyone here)
