I was diagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder & Dependent Personality Disorder. And was considering getting pregnant within the next yr. I'm on Lithuim, Keppra, Seroquel, & Clonazepam. Has anyone gone through a pregnancy with this disorder? And have any been on these medications during pregnancy & after? I really want to be careful & do this with the best precautions. Any advice/feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Not a good idea to have a baby when you are taking those kinds of medications, though I'm no doctor. I just wouldn't do it, the child could come out with very bad mental health problems just like us.

I know for a fact that Lithium is a big no for pregnancy. It causes heart defect in the fetus. I was on Lithium before I got pregnant, and went off it a year before my pregnancy (although I went off it not because of wanting to get pregnant.) So you will want to work very closely with your psychiatrist and your OB/GYN before you get pregnant.
I don't know about the other meds. I have bipolar disorder and psychotic features. I have had 3 successful pregnancies. 2 of which before my diagnosis and one after. All 3 times I was not in treatment. But, I do very well with pregnancy that's just me. Other people have difficulty. My first two pregnancies I did have post-pardum depression but not the third one. I wish you well. ![]()

You're going to want to have VERY thorough conversations with both your psychiatrist & a therapist (if you don't have one, get one) to discuss this. Not only will you have to wean off of ALL of your medications in order to have a successful pregnancy, but you will also need to have ways of coping with your sza. Because you WILL have freakouts. You WILL have crises. Because not only do you have sza, but you will also have all kinds of hormonal imbalances that can really screw with your mood. You're going to need a professional who is willing to see you on a very regular basis in order to talk things through with you & help you cope since you won't be taking medications anymore. And it would also be beneficial to have a therapist after the baby is born so that you can keep building coping mechanisms in order to successfully raise a child, despite your psychological issues.

My grandma was a pharamacy tech for 40 years and it is not a good idea. Those meds can cause severe problems with the baby. Most of them can cause heart defects in the baby. I have decided before I have children I am going to talk to my doctor about whether there is any safe medications for a baby. I agree with everyone else in saying talk to your doctor before you get pregnant. It will be best for you and a baby. You really need to start making plans now because if you do get pregnant you and your doctor need to have a plan. Figure out what medication need to be safe for a child. I haven't made a back up plan yet but I am not going to want to have children for at least 2 or 3 years so I have a lot of time to make a back up plan. I don't know about with the disorder but I know that with the medication the baby could come out with some serious problems.
