When I was only 4 or 5 years old I was electrocuted by playing around an outlet. My question is does this kind of 120V electrocution cause mental illness, in particular schizoaffective? Does anybody have any thoughts or have read anything about this?

Same thing happened to me by me sticking a pair of tweezers in an outlet at 5 years old that had blown me clear across my bedroom. I never thought that being electrocuted by an outlet had somehow contributed to my illness but it's something for me to think about.

I'm sure electricity affects the brain, they even do electroshock treatment for a reason but you didn't get a shock right to the head so idk. you were really little so it might have been enough to do something but i doubt it.

I think we all have done this at a young age. I didn't learn and did it not once but twice between ages 3-5.

I haven't electrocuted myself. Only touched a mild electric fence. But I certainly think there is a possibility that it could affect MI

Just a little by-the-way from a pedantic person:
Electrocution means Death by electric shock. Electric shock is the term you're looking for. |

I've read a lot about psychiatry and psychology but I've never come across any studies about electric shock causing mental illness. It's an interesting thought though. I don't think it's something that could be ruled out or proved. D.

Although I was showing symptoms from a very early age, it could have been exacerbated by an electrocution in my 20s.
I was hit with 220v AC @ 60Hz with 300 Amps.... not mili-amps! I should have been killed, and I even lost consciousness. That happened about 20 years ago when I was stationed in Japan in the military, and my family said that I was very different when I came back to the states. Can an electric shock on a 4 year old cause mental illness when..? - Yahoo! Answers has an interesting reply... who really knows?

I wouldn't be surprised if an injury sustained by electric shock could contribute to someone developing a mental illness. There are so many traumas or life events that can influence the expression of a genetic predisposition.
