Is anyone else tired of politicians painting mental illness with a broad brush when it comes to gun violence? it's like they are saying we are all just a second away from snapping...... So much for helping to end the stigma.

i seriously doubt the stigma surrounding mental illness will ever be absolved. i'm used to being categorized, while i don't like it.... it is what it is. i am used to it. doesn't help that serial killers generally have "mental illness" as well, lol. and to be frank, i couldn't care what anyone thinks about me as a person, i don't really care about stigma. people who don't have mental illness are stigmatized as well; whole races are stigmatized. no one ever talks about that though, at least not here. there are bigger worldly issues than the stigmatization of mentally ill people. ...just saying.

While it bothers the crap out of me, I didn't really spend much time thinking about it. Then today, I saw where the American Sniper wife said that mentally ill people and drug addicts are the problem. That made me so fearful, that she would say something like that in such a public way. I'm back to feeling like I have to hide my diagnoses.

I had to give this post a long thinking about. Took me 45 minutes...

Trust me everyone on this god forsaken earth has a psychotropic medication they could be on!

I feel like the DSM-V in the hands of a trained professional understands the ultra complex mystery of the human mind and condition, that they have an understanding for each indivual soul,....in the hands of a mindless idiot with an agenda the DSM-V turns into a bible and those labeled mentally ill are the witches burned at stake.

the problem in what situation? that's kind of appalling someone of higher public status would blatantly say something like that. (assuming you are talking about an actress?) like what? we stigmatize ourselves? it is true to some extent. was just talking about how people with certain mental illness talk down on those with a mental illness which differs to theirs...

Emattdar, the politicians will use anyone to make their point. They will always bash the mentally ill or those suffering from depression. Why? Cause there is money to be made off of us by the pharmacutical companies that is why they keep doing it... tc

I hate it too. My mom even said at my worst she never feared for her life or felt I would go off and hurt people. Not every crazy person has violent tendencies. It's frustrating.

I just put up a blatantly political post, talking about the incoming president and his party and what they're saying about disabled people (physically disabled as well as mentally disabled). You can find it here: http://forums.psychcentral.com/schiz...ck-stigma.html These forums seem to be geared toward nice, orderly sickos sitting around the campfire and talking about their symptoms and the medicines and techniques they are using to fight their illnesses. I don't see much political talk, but I think it's needed. Enjoy!
