Years ago I thought I was a misanthrope. Now I told my T that and she said no, you are schizoid. I still think that they are the same. Maybe it doesn't matter anymore?

They very well might be the same but the one that counts is the one that is your official diagnosis. That's the one that gets the right meds for you and maybe SSDI or whatever else you need.

Hello Cygnus: I'm not qualified to answer this question. To put it simply, as I understand it, a misanthrope hates humanity. A person who is schizoid tends to be reclusive & to have difficulty forming relationships. So I would say they are not the same thing.

Quite a few years ago, I was given an MMPI. The test suggested that I exhibited "schizoid ideation". Since then it has come to pass that I live pretty-much as what I typically call an urban hermit. I neither have nor want friends. So I guess the MMPI must have been at least somewhat accurate. But while I prefer to be alone I wouldn't say I hate humanity. I just prefer to keep to myself. This is my thinking on the subject, anyway.
Thanks for this!

Great , I think your analysis is right on. The misanthrope probably has a greater anger component directed aimlessly at humanity for whatever reason.
Thanks for this!

Misanthropy is the hatred of humankind.

Schizoid is not.

Sure it matters, but it really depends on you, and how you really feel about others. I am SPD, and I don't hate others, I just don't feel that they have anything to offer me, and I'd rather not fool with them. I don't know how many others share these thoughts like me out there. Here we all understand that we have a disorder and can discuss it openly, without being judged. No one in my family knows that I have SPD, I'm sure they think I am just quiet, and keep to my self. I have a facade I display when I am with them and others I meet or see in public. I really don't have friends. I am estranged. You guys are my confidants.

Not all schizoids are misanthropes, no.

I, however, am definitely a misanthrope as well as schizoid.

I definatly understand how you feel, as time goes on, my opinion of others is dwindling.
