Hey, I'm a new/old member here (see my intro) and I have a question about something I noticed and I was wanting to know if other people also had this problem.

First off, I am currently off all of my meds because I am moving back and forth, but will be able to switch T once i settle down in a month. So, I am having hallucinations pretty much everyday. It's very rare for me to have a "normal" day so far. I reverted back to sleeping as much as i can to silence the voices and made a vow to not turn back to alcohol again which i have kept so far. And sorry in advance if my post is hard to understand. I can't really focus right now.

Anyway, here is my question.

With Audio Hallucinations...I noticed that 99% of them are so freaking negative it drives me up a wall and the 1% that aren't negative are usually neutral and it's when the voices are repeating someone else. Is it normal for nearly all of the voices to be negative?

If you have any positive voices or know of anyone else that does I would really like to know because all i hear even now, as i'm typing this are
(list, may be TRIGGERING)
"they don't care" why are you typing? you don't deserve to live. why are you typing? your stupid. your stupid. they'll find you if you type this. why are you typing? stop. find somewhere to hide. they don't want to read this. they're going to get you.....

Sorry if this is triggering but I just wanted to give u an little taste of what they were saying. I have talked to my T, but I wanted a second opinion as of why they're so negative. Personally, I am a very positive person but these voices are really getting me down. I also have visual hallucinations but they are very minimal compared to audio.

Thanks in advance for the comments.

Sai

Hello Sai and welcome.

“Is it normal for nearly all of the voices to be negative?”

I think it is rather normal for this to be the case though I have positive auditory experiences as well. Your question brought up an interesting thought. I have horrible nightmares from time to time and I speak with the voices in my dreams. My therapist told me that something around two thirds of all dreams are negative and your question made me wonder if there isn’t some relation between the proportion of negativity of voices and that of negativity in dreams. If there is a link then perhaps we can say it stands to reason that if most dreams are negative then most voices will be as well.

I do have some positivity with auditory experiences. They laugh with me and sometimes at my nonsense…I like to have sort of banter with them. They cry with me as well. I mean to say I can literally feel them crying with me and through me.

I’d like to give you a taste of my “banter” if you don’t mind. This would be negative banter by the way. A way I use to combat their nonsense. I’ll use your dialogue as an example with my reply to the voices following each of their comments.

"they don't care" yes they do why are you typing? because I can you don't deserve to live. tell that to God why are you typing? because you can’t your stupid. your stupid. you’re redundant they'll find you if you type this. are they looking why are you typing? (sometimes I just go silent when they ask the same stupid question repeatedly) stop. find somewhere to hide. they don't want to read this. they're going to get you.....(and sometimes I just ignore)

Thank you so much for sharing this. You do sound like a positive person and perhaps you can use that to your advantage. Much like we can learn to control at least a portion of our dreams (like recognizing it is a dream and commanding ourself to wake up) I believe we can control or guide the voices if even in some small way. I think anyway.

Be well.
Thanks for this!

Thanks for the reply.

Interesting thought though. I do have positive dreams but around 80% of my dreams are negative. Seems to be some relationship there. Either way, it is interesting when you think about it.

I do have the voices laugh with and about me sometimes. When they laugh with me I really just think of it as a neutral response, but other then that I can't think of any positive voices. There is one voice that has never said anything negative, but she doesn't because the other voices will not like it.

About "guiding" our voices. My T did say that I can have an influence over the voices but personally, I choose to try to ignore them completely, but they know I can hear then and when I talk to them they just talk even more. I would love to influence them but I don't know how to make them "friendly" or good enough to talk nice.

Other then that, thanks I'm going to email my T tomorrow and ask her about this. Wish me luck.

Sai, this article might have some more ideas for you: How I Tamed the Voices in my Head. There are additional resource links at the end of the article.

You could also try intervoiceonline.org for some other ideas.

I don't know if any of those will work for you but you can review the information, share it with your therapist if you wish, and use what you do find helpful.

Before I found the right med my voices were nearly all negative. Reckon this is when it becomes a problem. Hearing voices is more common than people may think. Not everyone's voices are negative though. Its when they are negative and have a disruptive effect on day to day life that we end up having to go to the doc.

Hello Saisai. Maybe it is not halluciations. Maybe thats why meds did not stop it. What you have described is all quite normal for certain other conditions.

When I had auditory hallucinations, they said things like "you are the smartest person in the world!" it was weird.

My auditory hallucinations were mostly voices of people I knew, but they were just simply
not there. Sometimes I had loud ringing that never stopped too.

reg12> The voices to go away, or atleast don't some as much (not as loud) when I was on meds. I have been off of them for awhile and they came back and they almost seem louder, but I hate meds. I'm trying to get rid of them or cope with them without meds.

Here's an update: I talked to my T a few times already through email. She suggested that I eased into talking into the voices. to see why they were there. I tried that and it is actually better. There's something that concerns me though. I think I need to tell my T, but I don't know. I will make a new post and ask about it.
