This may sound like a strange question, but is there such a thing as a high functioning psychosis?
By high functioning I mean someone who is able to carry out their day to day activities fairly well and communicate with people even though they're going through a psychotic phase.
The reason I'm asking is because this has been happening to me. I'll start seeing and hearing things, plus I'll sometimes get really paranoid, but I'll still be able to function well.
During these times, my therapist says that I'm showing psychotic tendencies but she also says she's never seen someone who has "pockets" of psychosis and someone who is able to function well while being psychotic.
I've been seeing her for several years and she's been helping me a lot with my ptsd, did and depression. She's been practicing in psychotherapy for almost 30 years, though she admits that few of her clients have had trouble with psychotic disorders.
I've had these episodes of seeing and hearing things before (and I can tell the difference between these episodes and flashbacks) but they don't seem to be getting any better or worse.
My therapist is somewhat puzzled and so am I.

Thanks for listening

hi functioning expert here. so much so that when I went through a mental breakdown in 2001 not one of my friends, sons teachers and so on saw it coming. to them one day I was fine and the next the police were called and my son was in foster care because I was going to jump through a second floor window from depression, flashbacks and so on. Talk about shock some of those people still haven't recovered from what happened.

I can believe the part where you say that not one of your friends or family see's something coming. I was going through a terrible time several years ago and when I finally decided on therapy my family was very surprised.
I've been dealing with lots of other problems too like depression and ptsd but the psychotic part has me and my therapist puzzled because when the psychosis does happen, it doesn't present itself in the "classic" way.
I hope everything's going well with you.
Take care
