I asked my T this just two days ago. Since I was really scared of the idea that any day this could happen again. She told me that there is no right answer but that since I did have one it just made it more likely then others who have not.

I just think that's such a hard thing to predict. It seems like if you've had three, you'll probably have more. But there are people who don't.

Maybe you should go forward with the idea that you won't have more, but be prepared in case you do. Make an emergency medical directive or whatever they're called. Things like that.

My son, for example, gave his car away to a stranger during his last episode. I hope to persuade him to put my name on his title next time he buys a car. That way we'll both have to sign in order to transfer title.

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

I had a half dozen episodes when I was in my 20s. Between episodes I was able to function fairly well even without medication but then maybe in a year or so something would trigger another episode. Finally when I reached 30 or 31 the episodes stopped and I was OK for the next 20 years. I did go through a mild episode about a month after the 9/11 thing happened but it only lasted maybe 2 or 3 weeks and hardly anyone noticed. I guess that was because I was familiar with the symptoms and better able to deal with them.
That is too bad about your son's car Costello. I use to give stuff away also, and unfortunately there are those who prey on the weak.
Thanks for this!

Your experience is probably far more common than we know, Shoe. Of course, the popular wisdom has it that a person who has 6 episodes in a decade will have them their whole life. I wonder if the fact you avoided medication ultimately helped you.

I think it did, but I didn't totally avoid it as there were a few times when I probably needed it, usually when I ended up in the hospital. The longest I would stay on it though was maybe 2 or 3 months before I personally decide to stop taking it. The medicine help to lessen the symptoms or as this one lady doctor reasoned with me one time, "It will help slow your thoughts down" but after a while I decided it didn't float my boat.
I think for me the insanity had to play out or run its course and the medicine was preventing that from happening. Things that I went through fit closely to what the Grofs termed Spiritual Emergencies. I am finishing a pdf by him if you care to check it out. It is pretty interesting.
