now i know, as statistics say those with parents or a parent w schizophrenia chances are still low that the child would get schizophrenia. but realistically, how many people have one or two parents with it? how many of you have a mother with schizophrenia? does the sex of the parent technically have more effect on the childs mental state either way?

My mother was diagnosed variously as schizophrenic and bipolar. I don't know which diagnoses fitted her better. But I agree with Lb... I think when the main care giver is ill it has a bigger impact on the child.

It must be confusing to be raised by someone who's so paranoid. I read an essay a couple of years ago by a woman who had been raised by a mom who was dx'd with sz. It sounded like her mom loved her children, she was just pretty erratic. I remember her saying that sometimes she and her sister would push the dresser against the bedroom door at night to keep their mom out. When her sister left home for college, her fear was that she wouldn't be able to push the dresser alone.
I have a friend who has adopted a little boy whose biological parents are both dx'd sz. He's still pretty young - maybe 5 or 6? - but I think he's doing ok. Are you asking the question because you're worried about yourself?
