Hi everyone, I'm not sure what's going on with me lately but I have been hearing a voice inside my head for a while now. When I first heard it I could hear someone saying "boo " like they where trying to scare me. It was really weird at first but it became annoying. Then it stopped for a few months. It started again but getting more clear. I was talking to my boyfriend one night and then I heard it again in my head someone saying "****ing shut up". It felt like it was directed at my boyfriend. Now I think I can hear it more often not only when I'm alone but now when I'm at work? Is this real or maybe I'm just stressed? I do have lots of things going on in my personal life right now do not sure if it's just that. Feel like I'm going crazy sometimes. Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks for reading

Well, first of all, don't panic. Apparently voice hearing isn't specific to schizophrenia, and occurs more often than people would think.

Secondly...you'll find lots of people who can sympathise with you because they've been through something similar. For example, I find my voices are more annoying as hell than anything... they'll pick something inane and go on and on and on about it. I had a friend at university who had a voice that just went "Strange" behind his left ear... that's all it said, for weeks. Then it settled down to a more conversational, and therefor bearable style.

I think the voice is probably to do with stress, they mostly are, but isn't necessarily something to worry about. A majority of people actually hear voices at some point... strange but true. Not hearing voices is a statistical anomaly!

You'll be okay. (((hug)))

As mgran says, it isn't that uncommon, and doesn't always mean big trouble. Look at other issues in your life and experience and decide if it is something to be concerned about.

My psychiatrist is of the persuasion that it is a concern (in my case). Voices usually show up when my functioning takes a dive. It seems to be closely tied to scrambled brain syndrome for me. e.g. The other day I met with a group of guys to read together. I couldn't read or follow what was being read aloud. But a word suddenly became clear and sharp on the page, and spoke itself "whissssssssperrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr". It meant nothing, and had no bearing on the context. Still, the sound of the word on the page was less disturbing to me than the fact that I could comprehend nothing of what the guys were saying until about 15 minutes later.

The question, "are you hearing voices?" caused me confusion for a long time. I have thoughts. These thought try to understand people and events and objects around me. Sometimes these things become non-understandable and even threatening. That is when my imagination is activated. I look for patterns or clues to understand non-understandable people, events and objects. Sometimes my imagination produces nightmares. That is when I need help. I have thoughts, whether they are "voices" is not for me to determine. They aren't outside my head, I know that. So that is my perspective on it. If your really angry and unable to express that anger, I'd think the imagination might produce a nightmare, in a way. I'm not a dr but these are my thoughts. I hope they help. Don't panic.

I do suffer from nightmares always have as a child and I'm now 28 so shouldn't really have them any more but I do. I'm not sure what to do next with this. I don't really think I need to go to the doctor but it's still happening more and more. It's just annoying :/

I'm 43 and I've been having nightmare while awake forever. I watch them like TV now. I don't need to believe them, I just monitor them and manage the chaos a bit.

Why do you believe adults don't have nightmares? I don't have a lot of nightmares - never have had - but I still have one occasionally, and I'm 50.

No, I guess not. I'm sorry.

Quote:
Students normally experience 4 to 8 nightmares a year and adults only have nightmares once or twice a year. About 3% of young adults report having recurring nightmares and 1% of adults recount having nightmares once or twice a week. If a student or adult is suffering from excessive nightmares, or has a recurring nightmare they may want to seek help as this may be a symptom of a more serious condition.
