NIMH is the major funding agency for mental health research and they are publicly dismissing the DSM5---how did I miss this before.

Wow!

Yeah I read about this awhile back and thought this is cool because it gives some backing to what I have come to believe.

I wonder what the consequences will be; hopefully a paradigm shift for the better.
The old DSMs were meant to provide healthcare professionals with a language/definitions that would promote clear communication with each other, even, if they chose, with their patients; now it seems to be all about insurance and pharmaceuticals ---
I wonder what the "answer" is....will they roll everything into ICD codes...or something else. I am glad that NIMH isn't "buying" the new DSM. Hopefully it will affect research and treatment in a positive way-----

This is in the USA, NIMH funds the majority of scientific research and they are basically saying that there is no science in the DSM5 so they are going to follow basic signaling pathways etc instead of DSM categories. This is actually great news because sz gets very little funding and now it will have a shot at one large pool of money instead of tiny pools based on dx.

Yeah that would really be something if the NHS did this but I think the NIMH doing it is a huge step. Sorry it's old news I had just never heard it till I was looking at this new documentary in the making on indiegogo.
