I'm just wondering how many of us here smoke? I do, I was just wondering since I've read in a few books that a majority/ridiculously large amount of people with sz/sza smoke. I've been wondering for awhile why so many of us smoke, it intrigues me.

I've never smoked; never wanted to. None of my family or friends smoke so I've never seen the need to try it. The health risks, cost and smell (no offense!) put me off trying it to see if it helps the psychotic stuff.

I heard about this too. Does it mitigate symptoms or strong emotions that may trigger them?

No, I don't smoke. I smoked a bit years ago and before I had psychosis.

Yes I smoke. I love how it relaxes me. I started when all this psychosis stuff had really kicked off two years ago. But I haven't been consistently smoking it was at my last admission that I took it up again. Before that I hadn't touched a cigarette for more than 6 months or so. Heh. But oh well. Cheers to good health!

I switched to a personal vaporizer 2 years ago. I get all the nic I want without the harmful by products that come with cigarettes. But I do occasionally still smoke a analog cigarette.

I've smoked since I was 110 years old. Now that I'm thirty it's been 20 years. I gotta quit this.

i want a personal vaporizer but i usually stick with the disposable one. ecigs and ehookahs. but they are also expensive for disposable. between 7 to 10 dollars for 1 ecig/ehookah

once you make the initial investment, it becomes pretty cheap. All u buy is eliquids that last a long time and a battery every year. I figure I'm dishing out an equivalent of may be 30 cents a pack of cigarettes this way. Google the eGo it's the best bang for the buck. I have the variable voltage battery for it.

They do make rechargeable ecigs. My friend bought one where he just adds a flavored oil.

I smoke and I like it but nowadays it seems less and less people do. I feel like I stick out when I go smoke like people are ridiculing me or saying " there she is again smoking another cigarette! Doesn't she do anything else? She just had a cigarette a while ago and now she is smoking another one!! What is wrong with her? She must be a real nut-case if she smokes that much!!!--- "
Yes, I too have seen research studies about the smoking helping w/ psychotic symptoms. We talked about this here on a thread that Costello started awhile back. The name of the thread had to do with the recent public bans on smoking in front of buildings.

I wonder if those of you who smoke the e cigs get the same "kick" compared to the real deal? I don't get the same satisfaction but maybe it's a matter of completely switching over and getting used to them?
If I switched over to e cigs it would be less restricting. The monkey is always on my back and it's so hard to feed him sometimes.

Ugh exactly. It makes me feel like a freak, and I constantly feel judged for doing it(and I haven't been smoking for all that long either). It's like people look down on you if they find out you smoke. Doesn't make my life any easier to be judging me like that, but who cares what I say? I'm out of my mind and don't know what I'm saying. I've had people say "that's bad for you" and similar crap like I don't KNOW that already. Gah.

Well, I don't smoke, and I think people that do is fine with me as long as they don't do it around me.

I used to smoke and when I became out of breath walking home and noticed the smell sticking to everything around me I stopped.

I think its hard for non-smokers to be around smokers is because the smell really gets to us. But if you want to smoke its your business.

Nicotine is supposedly good for psychosis but I never personally noticed any difference. I used to smoke but now do not. I have a rechargible e-cig but I use it only occasionally.
I think I started smoking initially as a coping mechanism for social anxiety - gave me something to do with my hands, gave me an excuse to step outside and be alone, etc., but as less people smoke now I don't know how helpful it would be in that way?
I didn't have trouble quitting, I never have strong addictions. I've always been able to quit things when I wanted to. That's been very lucky for me in the past.
I don't really care if others smoke - their choice. About the smell - I really never knew it was there when I smoked. I couldn't smell it at all, truly. Then once I quit I began noticing it on people. I can't believe I smelled like that and didn't even know it! It doesn't bother me though, I just found it funny.

I remember when hospitals started becoming smoke free, the psych ward was the last place that went in to effect for obvious reasons lol.

lol yep @indievisible

theres only one hospital i been to that you could still smoke. mental hospital. i didnt bring ONE cig but id get free ones ALLL the time. the people liked me there.

people would complain about smoke times bcuz 15 min to smoke only. 3 times a day. and the staff would say "were one of the few that let you smoke. you want that taken away?". and if someone didnt clean up in the day room theyd threaten to take one of the smoke times away. one time it was and people got SO pissed off. LOLOL.
