Can antipsychotics treat the negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
I'm talking about affective flattering, poverty of speech and avolition.
what happened in your case? did you get better?

No...not at all....in my case they actually caused some negative symptoms....people said I was like a zombie until I finally tapered off the meds---I was on abilify.

Anti psychotics have never improved negative symptoms for me. If anything they made them worse like Sometimes psychotic mentioned.

Those are positive symptoms of schizophrenia, not negative ones.

Doesn't sound likely. They generally slow down the brain activity, so they may increase the existing negative symptoms.

Same for me too; just made it worse (though some more than others).

The only med that's ever helped with them is Geodon because I feel more social on it. However in my case a lot of the social withdrawal came from paranoia. I still have problems with motivation and anhedonia including socially. Abilify actually worsened my flattened affect too.

Hi:

From what I know, none of the current medications for schizophrenia treat the negative symptoms. But, but, but that doesn't mean there isn't treatment for the negative symptoms. There is a branch of talk therapy called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which has helped me with social interaction. I have heard mindfulness therapy--another branch--can help with lack of motivation although I have never tried it.

Type in google the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and you can find a certified therapist who may help. If you have the concentration to read Schizophrenia by Aaron T. Beck et all is a good read and he is the founder of CBT.

They can do. A one that suits you could clean up your thinking and improve your anxiety levels.
