From shouts to whispers hearing voices is not uncommon | Irish Examiner

Hearing voices is much more common than we've been lead to believe...17% in pre-teens, 7.5% in teens and I've heard 5% in adults. I wonder if those funneled into psych are better or worse in the long run....

It's amazing to me we hide something so prevalent....

I had no idea the percentage was so high....I never heard them as a kid...I wonder what the overall lifelong percentage is?

I never had voices as a kid, but I had delusional thinking.

I think I am beginning to hear voices whispering. I also feel paranoid that any individual in the public could be an agent sent to kill me (I'm 12)

How does one define voices? Are they actually auditory or are they thoughts that came out of nowhere/intrusive thoughts?

In this study they were auditory hallucinations not thoughts....ie you actually hear another person saying something and think it's real but in some manner realize it's not ie nobody is around...

I see.

when i was a teenager i used to hear a screech when i was falling asleep (sometimes accompanied by image of faceless people carrying a coffin). It went on for some time at irregular intervals. Never had actual auditory halucination since, i think, though.

Yeah falling asleep and waking up you can get hypnogogic and hypnopompic hallucinations which are considered totally normal.
