Harnessing the Innate Plasticity of the Brain for Recovery | Psychiatric Times

So this viedo is only about 4 minutes long. This guy runs the agency that directs pretty much all the government funded research into mental illness in the US and has previously said such things like life long medication might not be the best strategy.

He's basically talking about how there are many ways to access the brain and remodel it and we do it every day, every time we learn something new and while there is a place for medicine its not very good at targeting specific regions and circuitry in the brain. Its kind of interesting when you think of therapies like cbt as being perhaps much more specific in that regard than meds. He's not really clear on what the future of psychiatry looks like but one of the the things he suggests is that point blank the fact that a SSRI works doesn't mean there is an underlying imbalance in serotonin thus he seems to doubt a lot of the current models and looks instead toward a greater understanding of the brain and how it operates. Anyway nothing definite in a way forward but I really like this guy and thought some of you might want to see what a top researcher thinks vs a typical pdoc.
