'Toe-Walking' More Common in Kids With Mental Woes: Study

So apparently there is a link between autism and walking on your toes as a kid...but there are some references to this with childhood sz as well so now I'm wondering how common this. The rate for the general population is 5% vs 40% in autism. I don't have numbers of sz and psychosis because the paper was from 1958 thus not electronic...anyway just curious....I totally used to do this then my parents broke me of it and when I has issues with balance and had to learn to walk again at 12 I did the toe walking thing again....I still do it to some extent.

I did, actually. I was 3 months premature and my motor skills were delayed because of that. When I finally started walking, I walked on my toes so consistently that the achilles tendons didn't stretch fully - on my right foot it never stretched long enough and I can't walk heel first on that foot. Makes dancing difficult, especially when I picked up ballet as an adult, it was too late to really stretch them. Driving a car is hard too.

I'd never heard of it before and had to go find a video on youtube to see what it looked like. My son never did that.

I went ahead and voted 'no' - using my son's experience.

I know we have a small number of votes but just given the number of regulars this is already higher than the 1 in 20 rate that's average...kind of interesting...

It is interesting. It makes sense since it seems to be related to autism, and autism is said to be related to sz.

Yeah I still do it if I don't have shoes on....I think it's easier and faster....and my foot just sticks better with a toe based landing....I also do it on hills or stairs although going down hill or down stairs I am slower than others...up hill or flat it's much faster...
